Getting the Wheeling Fever
Hey guys,
I can't get my 86 Trooper turbo diesel started. Around the time it stopped running, I had previously put a mix of diesel fuel with some veg oil in it- not a lot- in the fuel tank. I don't know if this is just coincidence or not. I've run veg oil in it a lot before without any problem, but I will say, it was after warming up a lot more.

Here's what I've done to try and get it started:

1. new glow plugs

2. I undid the fuel line to the tank and put an isolated fuel hose to the injection pump fuel line going back to a fresh container of diesel fuel so that the injection pump is getting good fuel

3. Battery is fully charged - she cranks over real fast

4. Air filter is out- getting straight fresh air into the turbo

Here's what happens: Turn it on and wait for the glow plug light to go out, and then I hold the pedal down to the floor and crank the motor. It turns for about 4 secs and I stop. On the third or fourth try of doing this, it starts up and sounds real good and if I keep it floored it idles normal for about 8 to 10 seconds, then it sputters out like it's fuel starved. I wait a little while and then the same thing.

I though maybe there was a filter in the injection pump somewhere that got clogged during the veg oil pass-through, but the diagram of the pump doesn't show one. I'm stumped on this one .... it definetely feels like fuel stavation but I've got the return out of the pump going back to the container, so I can see the fuel and it is coming back.

Oh, here's something weird: After it runs, sputters, and dies out, the container of fresh fuel bubbles like a foggy volcano. It's a lot of air coming back up out of the injection pump and I have no idea from where. I have checked all the lines coming and going out of the injection pump and everything is tight.

If it was a bad injection pump, I don't think it would start at all, or if the injectors were clogged it would run as smoothly as it does until it stalls out.

Anyone have an idea what could be the problem? I have both Chiltons and the factory manual, but none them address anything like this... if you have ANY ideas on this, email me directly please. I'm dead in the water until I can figure this thing out.

I'd say you have air in the system. Have you tried the manual pump?
