If I lock my 01 Tundra with the remote, why can't I use the key to open the door and start the vehicle? If I do this the alarm goes off when I open the door and the engine will not start. Help!

I had the same problem with a vehicle I had with a stock alarm. If you lock it with the remote, you could only unlock it with the remote. If you locked it with the key you could unlock it with remote or key. It sucked when the remote wouldn't work. I would have to stand outside pressing the button for about 5 minutes. It wasn't a Toyota though. Don't know if they are alike. [ May 08, 2003, 06:14 PM: Message edited by: JKendrick ]

By pushing the button on the remote you are not only locking the doors but you are also activating the alarm system. So you have to use the remote to unlock/disarm the truck. If for some reason the remote does not work you can use the key to get in, and you have to turn the ignition key on and off like five times to disarm the alarm. It tells you all this good stuff in the owners manual. As far as I know all alarm systems are like this, aftermarket or factory.

Thanks for the replies. My wifes 4 Runner is not like that, you can lock with remote and then open the door with the key and start the engine. But that key probably has a chip in it. I bought this Tundra from an independent dealer and did not get a manual, so thanks for the heads up about disarming the alarm in the ignition. I'll try that.
