'86 manual tranny, my 4wd indicator light started flickering, then after +/- 1K miles decided to just stay on bright.

I drove through Montana w/ ice and snow covered roads in this condition. When in 4wd, the light was bright, the auto-lockers kicked in, everything was right for 4wd. In 2wd the hubs unlock, the axle & front driveshaft don't turn -- the light flickered for the 1st 1k, but now it's on bright all the time. (Only annoys me at night -- it's a pretty bright light)

I did a search and found some topics that sound like they touch on this subject, but am told
