Getting the Wheeling Fever
Howdy,
Would someone please give me a quick visual way to distinguish the pre '85 22R cylinder head that uses domed pistons and the post '84 "closed chamber" head. I guess I don't understand the closed chamber term. Also, for the '85 and later 22R and 22RE cylinder heads, is the ONLY difference the cam durations?
Thanks,
Andy

Look at the center of the exhaust manifold gasket, between the paired cylinders. If you see a single stud casting it is early (84-down), if you see two (with a center hole for earlier compatibility) then it is late (85-up).
Closed chamber means the combustion chamber around the valves are closed in, compared to the earlier design.
No, there are other differences besides the cams (are the cams different?).
Regards,
Kenton

quote:
Originally posted by Andy:
Howdy,
Would someone please give me a quick visual way to distinguish the pre '85 22R cylinder head that uses domed pistons and the post '84 "closed chamber" head. No problem. [Linked Image]
If you still can't find the exact info you need, give Tim at www.doaracingengines.com a call. He seems to be the "R" series guru of gurus and from what I hear is very helpful.
------------------
-Erik Bibelheimer
'86 44Runner, '97 T100
Erik's Toy 4x4 Pages

Thank you for the good information. In my horse trading, I ended up with a cylinder head and sketchy information about what engine it came from. From the information, it is from an '85 or later 22R or 22RE. It has a through hole and tapped mounts for a mechanical fuel pump. Is this simply blocked off for EFI engines? What kinds of changes were made for the 22R and 22RE heads from '85 to end of production? My engines are '83 and '84, so I may offer this extra head for sale. But I would like to know what it is.
Thanks,
Andy

Yes, the mechanical fuel pump opening is simply sealed off for EFI. From 85 up there were no changes made to the head, to my knowledge.
I will be in Alba-quirky in a couple weeks on business, and I am willing to trade a 84 head for your 85-up head, if you'd like. If so, email me for more info.
Regards,
Kenton

quote:
Originally posted by Andy:
...From the information, it is from an '85 or later 22R or 22RE.
