What do I have? '87 22R, 5 speed. Do I have a chain or gear driven transfer case? Bigger tires will happen soon and if I have a gear driven i'll maybe want to swap in Marlin's 4.7 gears. My shifter is like this:

One rule of thumb is that if you have a mini/4Runner t-case neutral, you have a gear driven case. The chain driven cases, or at least mine, didn't have a neutral. Marlin's site used to have a great page to help you answer this question easily, but I can't find it now.

Thanks, I have some reading to do and important decisions to make. It looks like I have a forward shifting case but top shift cases are cheap at the boneyard. I was aware of the Marlin site but never read much of it. There is a lot to digest there.

Just a tiny snippet of what I learned so far:

'84-'88 Carb. 22R, forward shift, 21 spline, G54 tranny.

all 22r and 22re engines with a 5 speed tranny have a gear driven.
All 22rte,3vze, and any truck or runner with a auto tranny have a chain driven.

both t cases are tough as nails. the gear driven can be regeared to 4.70 to 1 but in its stock configuration it is geared higher than the chain driven.

NOTE: the above listings are asuming that a t case swap has not been done

You got the good box, gear drive, 21 spline, I think fwd shift. Top shift, forward shift, does not matter, both can be made to work with a double tcase, retaining the forward shift or converting it as you please. The rear case must be top shift. It just means (fwd shift) you have long shift rails that go into the tranny tailpiece, where the shifter is placed. They can be converted, but no need. Consider a fwd shift front box retaining your current shifting arrangement, then a top shift rear box. Work fine last long time.

Just in case you don't know where it is, check out this picture. I have the gearcode circled. The tranny code would be right next to the gearcode. In this picture, the tranny code it W56. I'd be interested if on your truck it is R150, W56 or some other code. Let us know.
