Hey y'all, was thinking about cutting a hole in my airbox based on what i've read in the following links. Have any of you done this? If so, what do you think. Did it work/not work. Is it really important to pull the efi fuse. Any insight is really appreciated as i don't want to do any harm to the T.

As always, Thanks!!

Before you do it, you may want to do a search on this topic. From what I've known, it works wonder on 4Runner and Tacomas, but our T has a different air intake box, and larger engine compartment for the same size engine. Because of the extra room, our intake is not as restrictive. Any mod may worth little in terms of performance gain, if any.

If you do decide, let us know the result if you can post some pre/post MPG, or hp gain/loss.

i have done this mod , i have better throttle response , a litttle more oomph, and about a mile per gallon betterfuel economy , after you get used to not putting your foot into , because it sounds so awesome. i like the fact that if you dont like this mod , jsut screw the cap back in and your back to stock. one problem i have found , it tends to stumble around the 1500 to 2000 rpm range in second gear, i have not done any exhaust work yet , and that may be why , i am using a k and n filter, but i dontthink thats the cause , bc i pulled it out to clean it the other day and put in a stock filter while the k and n dried and such and it did the sane thing. but i do love the sound and i feel jsut from the seat of my pants that its got more power and oomph. i did also notice that i run at lower rpms to maintain a speed ( some say this isnt possible , but at 70 mph before mod i was at 3200 rpms , after mod at 70 im at 2900. ) try it and if you dont like the results putthe cap on and run it stock .

Question:

How is this deck plate accessible? Would you not rather have it from the inside (then pop air cover, put lid back, close air cover...into the water you go) or is there a seal problem this way?
I've not actually seen one other than the photos of it disassembled.

the deckplate itself , is made for boats , its a 2 piece assemply , the cap itself , which screws into a flanged recipticle, the cap has a rubber gasket , and when you putthe reciticle in the air box you seal it with sensor safe gasket sealer , when the cap is in place it should be air and water tight. there has been some discussion about warm air entering the air box , while moving this isnt a problem, but while at idle in a stopped postion you will be sucking in warm engine air , i have thought about making a sort of air dam which would force air from the grill area to the deckplate. its jsut something ive thought about and would be fairly simple , but it also wouldnt be totally warm air free, i hadnt planned on making it a sealed unit , but in theory you could , but then youd be losing some of the ability to gain as much free air as possible , it wouldnt essentailly become a air dam , or forced air type system.

Is the T100 airbox smooth like that to flush mount the deck plate? For some reason everytime I detail the engine I remember the thing having ridges on the sides <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />(guess I could run outside and look), does the deckplate go on the bottom of the airbox on a T?

Unfortunately, the T airbox is ridged and thats gonna cause some difficulties. I have the deckplate which has been sitting on my workbench for over a month now. A 4-inch diameter will just fit, according to others who have done the install. Everyone talks about using gasket sealer to make it work but with the ridges I plan on using silicone caulk to fill in the ridges, and installing a screen on the inside to keep bugs out of the airbox.

yep . i used a whole tube of gasket sealer , and it worked fine , i have yet to put in a screen , but i plan on it soon. the 4 inch jsut barely fits . cutting the hole wasa bit of a pain, i used a dremel tool , and wished i had a hole saw the correct size .

airrikk, when you put the cap back on and essentially make it stock, do you have the lull in acceleration or stumble problem, or is it gone completely? Did you have this stumble prior to trying this?
