My '86 4Runner is factory red which I despise so I decided to spray-bomb it silver-gray. It seems ok but the removeable top is still red and I'd like it to be black. Does anyone have any tips on how to paint it? ie. How do i prep it and should I use flat, gloss or semi-gloss?
Thanks much.

I painted a white one a while back. I just used semi-gloss krylon. It came out well and held up great for the 2 years I had it.
I didn't really prep it too well - just cleaned it good and wiped it down.

I sanded mine just to enough to rough it up a little and painted it with that cheap spray can-o-bed liner stuff. its held up great to the tree limbs and such that attack it. if you need to do any touch-up later this stuff does not get that "patchy" look. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

Ditto on the bed liner stuff. I bought a gallon of Duplicolor's spray on bedliner and thinned it as recommended on the container. I applied it with a cheap-o pressure pot spray gun ($20 thru Harbor Freight). Turned out great and has held up to abuse beautifully.
