Hey! We're talking trucks here! Stay focused! Swapping out the Power Steering Pump on the 3.0 requires taking off the pulley first. I can't get the #(*%^ nut off the pulley! Tried everyting I could think of with the tools I had - lots of pentrating oil, vise-grips, belt tension, heat, long cheater bar on the socket wrench - it won't budge! I can't get a nut splitter on because of the pulley recess and I'm afraid I'll crush the pulley if i try to grab it by the rim. Is there a secret I'm not aware of? Anyone got any tricks?

I try checking the Chilton book for ya with out success. Is there a nut behind the pulley that you can use as leverage? The book says something about a woodruff key? that thing suppose to have only 32 ft lbs of torque on it.

OK, I'm going with a long shot here, is it per chance a left hand thread? It's on a rotating assembly and a majority of those are left hand threads for safety concerns...

Thanks for trying guys! Chilton, Haynes & the FSM all say the same: 'Remove the PS Pump...' then they go right into how to rebuild it. The woodruff key sits between the shaft and pulley; it locks them together so that the pulley isn't just spinning on a hub. Can't get to it w/o taking the nut off first. The shaft is a standard thread; I can see the very end of it outside the nut. The new pump is a standard thread also. Anyone else?

If I understand right you are trying to remove the nut on the power steering pump shaft in front of the pulley. Is the pump on the truck or off? It is often best to loosen something like this while it is on the truck and the belt is good and tight. With any luck the belt will keep the pulley from turning and permit you to loosen the nut. Second thought is an impact gun. An impact will often remove nuts or bolts that you can't easily get otherwise. If it is really tight you may need a good heavy duty impact gun. The cheap ones will not have enough torque to get it off.

Use an Impact socket, breaker bar, and cheater.
Brace it all against the pass. frame rail and bump the starter a few times.
If it works for the crank pulley bolt, it should Bust This Nut for ya! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/nana.gif" alt="" />

Thanks everybody! Got it off last night. Guess it needed an extra day of soaking in penetrant. Also, a new pair of vise-grips since the teeth on my old one were worn, plus a helper so I could use both hands on the cheater bar I had on the socket wrench. Ended up with busted knuckles on all 4 hands when it finally gave. No puddles of fluid this morning, so I'm happy.
