new discs for my 4runner? #296936 08/04/03 07:49 PM

Need a Spot
So after 185K miles I believe I am in for some new rotors. I have not checked them yet, but I imagine they will be pretty close to the runout spec so I will have to replace them(they weren't far the last time I turned them). Any suggestions would be most helpful. I do alot of highway driving - however slowly but surely I am heading more and more off-road

Thanks in advance.

Aaron

Are you looking for tips on doing the job yourself or recommendations for rotors and pads?

Body Damage is Cool
And what year is the vehicle?
If it's 84-85 you could do a vented rotor swap.

I was thinking of doing it myself - I have on 2wd toys before - I figure it could only be a whole lot more work on the 4x4. LOL

I was actually looking for recommendations for rotors and pads.

Thanks

I have had nothing but good luck with Toyota parts - both rotors and pads, and would recommend them. If you got 185k out of them, that says a lot.

Here's a complete series of articles on front-end maintenance.

i just went down to napa and bought their mid-grade pads and cheapest rotors. i have absolutely no complaints.

the job did take me quite a bit of time though. it's a real pain in the ass and i had to use generous amounts of pb blaster to get the rotors off the hub.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
I recently did the job myself on my '89 4x4 PU and it was tough but well worth the effort. I got excellant advice on this forum so maybe do a search and follow the thread.

I can highly recommend the Axiss pads I installed. They have been great and really impressive in every situation. They ran me about $35 a set but well worth the price. I don't recall which rotors I installed but I am very happy with this setup.

Advice on the install...plenty of the PB Blaster and don't forget a good heavy but small hand sledgehammer and brass punch. Do the wheel bearings and races at the same time as well. The Timken bearings can be gotten at Autozone. Give yourself plenty of time to do it right. I took about 4 hours per side.

Best of luck with it.
