Hi guys, just wondering if anyone has this problem. We just bought a 2000 Tracker and the transmission is a little touchy. If you downshift too quickly from 5th to 4th or up shift too quickly like from 2nd to 3rd the gears clash. No big deal, I go easy on it anyway, and either double clutch or slipshift it and it's fine. A mechanic friend has an Alldata program and on it, it shows that there is a TSB from Chevrolet stating that there is a rebuild kit for the tranny. They replace the syncros and put in larger springs, I'm not sure exactly what they are for I'm not a transmision expert . Have any of you had this problem and did any of you have the dealer rebuild the transmission???? I don't know, I always thought of transmissions and differetials as something that only a professianal should touch, way too easy to mess it up, I'm willing to live with it, it's no big deal, I just wonder if it's going to get worse and take a on me somewhere, any info and feedback would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks, Dave

Try Redline MTL in there. I've always had good results. In an '87 Acura Integra, it would grind into 3rd. That fixed the problem. It also made the tranny in my '83 Toyota pickup shift much better.
I only note this a bandage and not a permanent fix as the tranny wears over time, the problem will come back.

Hey, thanks for the reply. I've posted in a couple of other BBS boards, iZOOK.com and ZUKIWORLD that I found, a lot of people looked, but no one posted, I'm getting more and more the feeling that I'm one of only a few that have experienced this. Do you have a 5 speed or an automatic? Oh and BTW, do you know if the 5 speed is the same between the V-6 and the 4? That might explain things too. Thanks again, Dave

I have an automatic. I'm not sure if the I4 & V6 share the same manual trans or not.

Yeah, I"m not sure either, I was just talking to a guy in a Yahoo Group who has a similar problem with his, he say's he hear that you have to change the gear oil to synthetic in order for it to help, funny thing is, GM say's it used it in the first place. I'll have to find out more. Dave

I'm NOT a transmission expert by any means, but af far as the meaning of "They replace the syncros"; syncros are there to syncronize the two sets of gear teeth so that they mate properly & quietly. If the teeth of the two gears about to meet aren't syncronized, the grind. By double clutching, you're manually doing the job the syncros are supposed to do for you automatically, so as long as there's no grinding, there shouldn't be any damage, I THINK.
Manual transmissions are infinitely more simple (and some say easy to work on) than autos, but I still wouldn't want to work on one.
Good Luck.

Yeah, transmisions are definetely NOT on my list of things I'm able to do . It's not a big deal, I just slip it out of gear, throttle it up a bit, slip the clutch and bammo, right into the next gear like a hot knife through butter. I'm very happy with the truck, I didn't really buy it to go wheeling, I was looking for an excelent, durable daily driver that'll go in the snow, because we get that here, and it's really an excelent truck. I've been averaging 27.5 to almost 28 mpg, it hasn't lost a drop of oil in the 1,300 miles I've driven it yet, and probably won't lose any. I'm wondering if anyone has tried the synthetic oil in their tranny's yet?? Thanks for the reply, Dave

Not sure what gear oil you are refering to. Redline MTL is synthetic gear oil specifically for manual transmissions (MTL=Manual Transmission Lube). Some gear boxes use motor oil and when switched to synthetic motor oil, the syncos have problems because there is not enough friction. Yeah, I"m not sure either, I was just talking to a guy in a Yahoo Group who has a similar problem with his, he say's he hear that you have to change the gear oil to synthetic in order for it to help, funny thing is, GM say's it used it in the first place.
