Gear codes??? #317240 09/17/03 06:54 PM

Hey all,
I have been looking for a gear code chart for my T and have been unable to find a source. The axle code on my door jamb is A07A. I did look at a chart from a Tacoma website, but my code was not listed. The interesting thing is that chart I looked at listed codes beginning with A as 7.5" differentials. Could I possibly have a 7.5" diff in my 2wd T ???
Anyone know where I can find this info?? Also, the 1996 T100 brochure lists the axle ratio on my truck as 3.62:1 but I would like to confirm this.
The reason I'm asking is I want to put bigger tires on my truck (31x10.5x15) and I'm trying to get a feel before hand how this will afect my acceleration and the use of 5th gear on the highway. I'll most likely install a 2" PA bodylift for a little more clearance with the new tires.
If I have to re-gear I'll probably take the opportunity to have a locker installed as well.
I guess after all these years you guys have finally rubbed off on me <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
Any input will be appreciated.

When I bought my 96 T it was all stock but had very worn 32s on it. I put 31s on without any lift and they fit no problem. Dont know much about the 2wd drive versions but thew 4ws have about 8.25 rearends. Alos I have an auto so no 5th gear info. Hopefully the rest of the guys will chime in

Yea, I always just assumed I had the 8.25 (8.4) rear end and I'm still pretty sure I do. I don't see why Toyota would put a different rear end in the 2wd longbeds.
Anyone else out there have the A07A code on thier door jamb???
After an exhausting search of this board I did find a post by a member who put 31s on his 2wd before he lifted it, although he said there was not much extra room in the wheel wells (that's why I'm thinking a 2" BL).
I guess if nobody knows about the gear codes I'll just have to do the "jack and spin" method to confirm the gear ratio.
Thanks man.

that is a 2WD only code. erikb has the specs on his web page, but the pics are too small. i have bigger ones at work. it will depend on reg cab vs. ex cab and what size tires it came with stock. the 3.4L 4x4s were all 4.10 (5 speed) and 4.30 (auto).

Thanks Scott,
I'll look at Erik's page again.
My truck is a reg cab, and it came with 215/75/15 tires.

Looks like a 2wd standard cab 5spd w/ 215's should have come w/ 3.62:1 (in '97).

erik,

on your old website, those came up big. now they are too small to read.

The readability of Erik's page might be a browser issue - I'm using IE6 and that (or some plugin) is allowing me to zoom in enough to read it. You could save the jpg's, then use a viewer on your machine to zoom in further. There is enough data/resolution in the image to read the data, it's a matter of getting it to the eyeball...

Anybody know how to tell if a truck had the optional tire package at the factory? I've got a "Titan" that was a SE Toyota creation, apparently - it's a DX with 15" alloys and a pin stripe. Something tells me that if they added it after the factory, they didn't regear it...

Scott

ps - to the original poster - my 2WD has 30" tires with plenty of room to spare in the wheel well, I can't imagine another inch making that much difference.

Yea, I saw the brochure pics on your site Erik. Actually, most all of that info is in my 1996 brochure, and it does state a 3.62:1 rear end for my truck. I just thought it was strange for one trim level to have such high gears when most of the others seam to have lower gears to begin with. Must be a mileage/economy thing. Also, I guess the tire upgrade would have to come from the factory as the gearing with the bigger 235/75 tires is 3.77:1
Oh well, I'm going to look at some 31x10.5 Bridgestone Dueller ATs on 15x7 Tacoma alloys tommorrow. I'll put one on the front first to make sure they fit, but I don't envision any problems.
Thanks to all you guys for the responses <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />.
