Lug nuts ?? #322442 09/28/03 04:41 PM

OK...I went ahead and purchased a set of alloy wheels (from a '97 Tacoma) with 31x10.5x15 Bridgestone Dueler A/T tires mounted and balanced.
The wheels went on fine and the tires ride very nice (no shaking, shimmy, vibration....nothing but a nice ride).
My question concerns the lug nuts. The originals that I have are the acorn style(small and tapered at one end). When I was at the stealership getting my new center caps, I asked the guy about the lug nuts. Of course he didn't know, but he showed me the two styles that they had. One was the acorn style and the other had a kind of sleeve that looked like it may take up the little bit of extra room in the hole where the wheel fits on the wheel studs. Anyway, I went ahead and used my original lug nuts (acorn style) and like I said, the wheels appear to be lined up perfectly and the truck rides nice.
My question is (finally ), will the acorn style lug nuts be OK for the long haul or should I be using the other style. I just don't want to do any damage to my new (new to me) wheels by using the wrong nuts. Could some of you guys with alloys check your lug nuts for me and let me know which style you have???
As always, thanks in advance for any info.

You want acorn lugs for steel wheels and the others for alloys.

I have the 16" factory alloys and I have the sleeved style. Adam is correct. The steel wheels have a counter-sink for the acorn style nuts and the alloys have a straight cut hole.

Ditto- use the correct style lug nuts for your wheels or you will have problems down the road (no pun intended).

Just wanted to point out that the above only applies to Toyota stock wheels... Most aftermarket alloy wheels also use the Cragar style acorn lug. The collared sleeve style lug should only be used on the specific wheel they came with, of which there are several different size collared lugs out there. Don't go mixing & matching.

It's usually real easy to tell which type you should have; If you look down into the lug bore on the wheel you can typically see how the base looks.

Thanks for the heads up. The alloys I bought are Toyota wheels from a '97 Tacoma. I went to my local favorite parts store and the guy couldn't match any aftermarket lug nuts to my studs (and this guy has everything!). So.....I am stuck paying and arm and a leg at the Stealership for 24 lug nuts. Oh well, better safe than sorry.
I wouldn't mind the cost, but they (stealer) just bent me over on my new center caps All that cash for four cheap ass pieces of plastic!!!
Thanks again guys,

joel

Thanks for the link. Is this the old Toyotaguys.com site??

I went ahead and picked up the nuts this morning and just ponied up the money. I didn't feel good at all about not having the proper lug nuts on my wheels.
