Instead of hijacking the 3.4 swap post with another m series question, I figured I would start another topic. HeHe... How much engine lift is needed for the oilpan to clear on a 7mge or 5gme? On this page ORC - Supra Swap this guy says that it takes approximately 4 inches of vertical travel to clear the front diff. I could possibly make a modified oilpan if needed. I just wonder what the combnation of oilpan modification vs drivetrain lift will be. No, I will not be doing a SAS(don't need it) and a 4" superlift is not very realistic right now. My wife has ok'd the engine rebuild/swap but I don't think I could get a lift out of it. At the most, I would be doing would be a 1" or 2" body lift which can also translate into a 1" or 2" drivtrain lift. Any ideas??? Anyone done this with IFS? Is is feasable without major suspension lift or SAS? Or should I just dream on? The junkyard near me has a few 5gme's and I think 1 or 2 7gme's out of Cressidas(not supras) that I probably could get fairly cheap(I think).

Thanks
Roy

do a search on the pirate board - www.supracharged.com (i think) has the answers , picture of modded oil pickup etc. - i beleive a 2" body and driveline lift will work with out modifying the oil pan on the 7m engines. skinner

I've never done this, however I know a bit about the M series engines and have researched this extensively. Toyota put these engines into cars usually sporty cars so they needed a low COG, because of this there are several different oilpans that were used depending on the crossmember etc. I believe (please anyone correct me if I'm wrong) that there are 3 different oilpans that will bolt up to any M series engine. Research which one you will need and choose accordingly. All of the M series blocks are the same untill the turbo block which is different inside but outside is the same.

A 2in body lift is all you should need to make it fit. I would look for a 7m or 5m from a cressida as it is likely not too abused and behind an auto you don't have to worry about it being regularly shifted at 7grand (which is more then possible with a stock M series). Whatever engine you go with I would also do a mild rebuild: seals, gaskets, maybe even rings etc. The motors are great engines however at this age they sometimes develop problems in those areas. All of that should take you a day or less with the engine out though, they're quite easy to work on.

From Andy Zook's 5M swap:

"I have also heard that this swap will only work in trucks with a solid front axle (as opposed to IFS) because of clearance issues with the oil pan. While this may be true with the front-sump pan that is originally on the 5M, I believe that swapping the original oil pan for one from a 7M-GE (MKIII Supra engine) could solve this issue. The 7M has the sump located in the rear of the engine which may, or may not provide enough clearance for the IFS components. The sump on the oil pan also looks like it will interfere with crossover steering setups. I have been researching the possibilities of a different oil pan for this reason."

I believe the cressida has the sump in the middle. You may have to source an oilpan and sump before you do the swap however CAZ has done this swap I believe and he could tell you more about this.

Here are some sites I found:
