I am guessing your "new" starter included a solinoid on it. You probally had a problem with the solinoid and not the starter.

My problem was the starter. Tapped it with a hammer, it fired up. But...it only worked once. Had to replace the starter. $180 - $50 core from AutoZone. Had it running in 30 mins. This is my first Monty and I love it. I had a '90 trooper, but the Monty is faster, smooter, and i love the bouncy seat. Now to find some cool stuff for it.... like brush guard and roof rack! jason in NC For future reference you can get them for probably $80 or less from a local starter/alternator rebuilder. You can find them in the yellow pages or look one up online. I found mine for $80 and that's in $$$$$$$$$$ Silicon Valley!

Hope this helps. My 92 (gen II) has had a similar problem since the day I bought it. Jiggling the key would usually be enough to get it to start. When I'd go to start it, all the lights worked properly, as did anything battery operated, but the engine did nothing. It seemed like the starter switch and guess what? It eventually wouldn't start at all, no matter how much I jiggled the switch, or how fast I turned the key (don't laugh--that worked the best). Called up Ken Garff Mitsubishi in Salt Lake and had them send me a new starter switch. Remove the lower portion of the steering column, the lower part of the dash, and slapped it in. It took 2 seconds once the steering column cover was removed to install. No problems since!!! Hope this helps.

Do a search for starter within the last month or better yet view all my posts. I had a recent thread on my 90 where I had the same problem. If I recall correctly within this thread there are proceedures to troubleshoot this problem to determine what is bad (starter, switch, or solenoid).
If not, I can post the proceedures later.

madmitch, I'm guessing you didn't HAVE TO buy that new ignition switch. You might have been able to clean it instead. Check out this thread & tell me what you think: http://forums.vmag.com/suvmontero1200/messages/2343.htmlHaving said that at least now you have the piece of mind that it is fixed!

I wished I could have found one for $80, but the fact is it was 10:45pm and I was 80 miles from home. Had to get it from AutoZone.
I'm guessing it was the orginal starter that went bad, so if i get another 200K miles out of this one, then that aint too bad!

Hey, I finally have an answer instead of a question I had the same problem, and thought my battery was giving out. My mechanic neighbour who knows everything about anything explained to me about a sleeve inside the starter that is drawn into position when I turn the ignition key. The small current from the wires in the steering column causes a magnet to pull this sleeve into position, at which point the sleeve completes the circut that turns the starter. It's a matter of replacing that sleeve....he showed me one...relatively cheap to repair. What causes the sleeve to fail, I don't know.
