I see a couple of issues here. 1) 39K on a '94. Are you sure? 2) If so, the front end should be nearly mint. Look around under the truck, look for anything worn smooth &/or shiny. Grab onto everything that you can and give it a good push/pull/twist. Hope you find the problem before dropping $425.

Fixing it yourself depends on how mechanical you are, for me it's about a 2 on a scale of 1-10. Check to make sure your shocks are not loose before going and getting the half-shaft. I have never had a halfshaft bang only when I hit bumps!!! I had one that was broken at the stub shaft and it did not make any noise, even when it was in four wheel drive.

What kind of banging noise is this exactly? It could just be the factory installed pos steering stops that wore out after the first 100 miles... when turning over a bump those trucks can produce horrible noises if your wheel is cranked all the way.... but it sounds like toyota diagnosed your problem, and they know more than i do... that was just a problem i had with bumps and noises.

Those 39000 miles must have been all rough roads. Sounds like she was rode hard and put away wet. Or maybe the speedo cable was disconnected for just a few miles.

425???? I just bought a used 1/2 shaft for 45 bucks. Use the Toyomart or toy wreckers in Sacramento . Your front end WILL make noise and mine always does, just make sure you are greased, tigght and have replacements if needed.
