Body Damage is Cool
I'm in the process of changing out my transmission (W56), and I already knew the throwout bearing was going out....so I have one on hand to replace that also.

When I removed the transmission and started inspecting the clutch, the first thing I noticed was that there was alot of WEAR where the throwout bearing contacts the "spring loaded fan-fingers" of the clutch. This is a new Marlin clutch that I installed maybe 5,000 miles ago. Is this normal?? Or, is it possible that the bad throwout bearing has caused this to wear abnormally fast??

Now, my next question is the biggy.....does this wear change my methodology of simply swapping out the throwout bearing? Will the new throwout bearing be damaged or not operate correctly with this worn spot in the clutch?? I don't have a micrometer, but I'd say the clutch fingers are worn down approximately 1/64"....somewhat substantial. Even on my old ass clutch that I replaced, I didn't have wear like this....perhaps this was caused by me being stupid with my duals?? I don't know...anyways.

Thanks for any insight...
Max

That wear is unusual as you have suspected. Depending on how bad it is, I'd be afraid to put that pressure plate back in service. The wear was most likely caused by your worn out throw out bearing. Weather or not it'll affect your new throw out bearing is anybody's guess. I used to be pretty good at getting one of those trannies out...bout 30-40 mins or so. LOL. So I'D (in capital letters) prolly stick it back in...but then again, it may leave you on the side of the road. Don't think those pressure plates are too awful expensive. Good luck.

Well if it was me, as busy as I stay and what little time to wrench on my stuff, I'd slap a new pressure plate in it while the tranny is down. The wear you mentioned is abnormal. You never know, might last 100,000 miles or might last till around 40 miles from the nearest pavement.

did you not replace the TO bearing when you replaced the clutch last... Big no no if you didn't...

If you did....

I'm not trying to insult you but did you put the bering on the right direction? putting it on backwards would cause some major problems.

No worries insulting me, I do everything bass-ackwards

Well, the truth of the matter is that when I intalled the new clutch to begin with....I completely forgot about the TO bearing until the duals and driveshafts were bolted on and I had driven about 1,000 miles. By then, I said f#&@ it....oh well. Life's a bizatch, then you die. Funny thing is I replaced the pilot bearing, got the flywheel surfaced, etc....and even had the TO bearing. I found it one day when searching through some of my "spares" and thought "OH SH#%! I didn't put the TO bearing in". LOL!

I'm gonna just order a new clutch from Marlin tomorrow, no biggie. Maybe this time I'll remember the TO bearing

Marlin gave me a 1 year warranty on the clutch I got from him. Call him and see what he tells you. He can probably diagnose the cause of the unusual throw out bearing for you on the phone as I'm sure he's seen it before.

I would never ask Marlin to warranty his components that I obviously screwed up. Period.
