Getting the Wheeling Fever

I came from Taiwan this Jul. When I was in Taiwan, I had a Suzuki Grand vitara. I installed ARB air locker, 2.5 inch body lift and also a Safari snorkel.
I just bought a used 99 montero 2 weeks ago. I found here is a very helpful information source for me. But, I am wondering why here is no lastest Montero owner here. is there any specific reason for that ? I am just curious. Because i am searching somebody have the same car with me and modified something that I can reference.
Thank you all.
Dick

Welcome.
...it's cheaper to buy an older Mitsu, and install all the goodies. And, of course, some of us have had our "oldies" since new, and have yet to find a good reason to replace it!

This may get me in trouble, and I do not want to paint ALL newer monty owner with the same brush but...
With the price of the newest montero, I have a hard time believing that alot of the country club crowd is going to want to take their brand new suv and smash it up. They also are still under warranty, so they wont need the info that we provide here. Oppps... now I have gone and done it.

Many (most?) of the older Monty owners, especially the SWBs, hace them as "projects" and hobby rigs, not daily drivers. Haven't priced them, but I would think a 99 Limited must go for somewhere around $20k. That's alot of money for most for a hobby. I've got less than $1k in acquiring my SWBs. When I'm done, I'm guessing I'll have less than $5k into the one that survives, along with plenty of spare parts. And a boat load of fun in the process...
Plus, we all drive our Monties because they are different. Most new Monties are driven by soccer moms and grocery getters (no offense intended). I've been driving them for quite a few years for camping, climbing, and general go-anywhere stuff. Recently though I was bitten by the off-roading bug. (Hence the SWB project!)

Whats up Dick0309. I have a 99 and have done a few things to my Montero. If you have any questions, about what i've done to mine, feel free to ask, but most of the guys here can tell you just about anything you need to know about your 99. So what does that Monty come with. Any factory rear lockers.... give us the goods on your truck And where do you live at?

If I am correct the 99 is a Gen2.5. Meaning overall same body styling (noticeable difference is the fender blisters) as the Gen2, with some drivetrain and powerplant diferences. Angelo will know more than anyone else (based on his personal experience) I can think of.
But you could still glean alot from the Gen2 talk that goes on here - watch for anyone with a 92 and newer.
And of course those Gen1 guys have a few good things to say once in a while

Thank you all, In the beginning I plan to buy a used Grand Cherokee. However my friend told me Japanese car will be more reliable. So, I focus on 4runner and pathfinder. But, these 2 cars are not cheap either. When I go to Major world (used car dealer), I found a 99 Montero standing over there. You know, the Pajero is famous in Taiwan. So, I just jump in the Montero and decide to buy it. I am not familiar to modify my car by myself. This is why I bought a latest model. I just look around here if someone have the same model with me can give me suggestion. Now here is my question : I feel the suspension of 99 Montero is pretty soft. So, I plan to install air spring in the rear suspension. Any suggestion ? I also want to install fog lights too. But I don't have brush guard. Does anyone know where can I get a cheap brush bar just for installing fog lights. By the way, I live in Bronx, New York. Any place can play offroad nearby. (not so heavy, please) Hello Angelo : Do you mind e_mail me photos of your 99 Montero. I am "very" interested in your car. dick.saralyn@verizon.netDick
