Ladies and Gentlemen; I've been lurking here for about 9 months with nothing to say, but enjoying the forum. But now I need a piece of information from the trooper informed. My 2001 trooper ABS suxx. I almost hit a roadside marker because I pulled off the pavement onto a wet shoulder to allow an ambulance to pass. Normally, I'd have slowed down in plenty of time to stop before the E-vehicle passed, but the ABS effectivly turned off my brakes so, not only did I not slow down so the e-vehicle didn't pass me in time, but the roadside marker came up so fast, I thought I would have to re-enter the road in front of the e-vehicle to avoid the marker. I resolved to hit the marker about the time the e-veh passed and was able to avoid both. Question: Where is the disconnect for the ABS? Is it illegal to disconnect it? Can my local Isuzu dealer or other "tune" the G@#D&^amed thing down? When I step on the brakes, I expect to get a response. What good is it to avoid a slide if I'm going faster than the car in front of me? Sorry if I sound stressed. Maybe next time I'll post a more amusing thread...Like next spring.

Pop the hood and pull the ABS fuse out.Lots of people pull fuse it works great offroad(thanks RodeoBob) ....the lite is annoying . Is it illegal?...........mmmmmmm......well if you rearend someone,or side swipe etc...and investigators find the ABS brakes were messed with.....you'd be screwed..... well in those cases you'd be screwed anyways..... so go for it see if you like them better....... make sure the other parts of brake system are working correctly. Thanks, Bansil. that's what I was after. I had an old Ford F150 that I just unplugged a connector. I suppose I'll have to learn to live with the light...I forgot about that. Anyway, I'll try to keep the sheetmetal smooth, that way I won't have to deal with any legal ramifications. MutinousDoug

I belive that there is a big misconception when it comes to ABS the system is not designed to stop you any faster is is designed so that you do not loose the ability to steer your vehicle when you brake hard enough to lock the brakes and should also allow for better stopping on wet surfaces

Well, anyone who labors under the misconception that ABS stops you quicker will be disabused of that notion as soon as they experience the system in action. In the incident I related above, I had two wheels on dry pavement at all times. My DIRECTION was fully under control (thank you: ABS) My speed was almost entirely under control of the ABS (F@#K you: ABS). There ought to be a way to adjust the "gain" on the system to account for conditions i.e. tires, mud/sand/snow/ice and driver experience. I doubt there is such an adjustment; therefore, I'll be looking at the dash light.

Have you had your ABS serviced in the recall?
From what it sounds like is that you had 2 tires with good traction and 2 tires with bad traction.
Although I am not sure if it applies to your year, this is a known problem with the Isuzu ABS system and according to isuzu it can cause extremely longer stop times and even lead to collisions.
Goto your local Isuzu dealership and see if it has been fixed and if not have it fixed immediately.
By the way, when correctly setup, ABS does greatly reduce stopping times because you have maximum stopping power during slight slip of traction as with ABS, but without ABS if the wheels lockup the stopping distance is increased greatly.

I have received no notice of recall. My Trooper is 2001. I can't find any recalls listed on the internet for ABS problem for this year Troop. I will definitely call the dealer Monday. Thanks!
