I am posting to get an update on how you like the mufflers. I have had the Power Vault muffler on my truck for 2.5 months now and am sorry to say I can not deal with the sound anymore. I thoght i would get used to it, but that isn't happening. It drones way too much in the cabin and I can only imagine what it is like outside the truck. I have changed the tail pipe a few times with no luck.

I have gone through the search and found than a lot of people have put the Dynomax Super Turbo muffler on and like it. I would just like an update on how the sound is inside and outside of your truck. As well as what size pipe you used. What type of sound is it? Is it overbearing?

Thanks a ton

Roll Me Over
I have some direct experience here...

About a month ago I put on a 17733 Dynomax Super Turbo, with 2.5 inch pipe from the Y back. I found it to be subjectively too loud, especially at around 2500 rpm (highway speed). I think the loudness was similar to a PV, which I heard on some VXs at Moab last spring, although the Dynomax tone is somewhat different.

So, I switched to a 17748. This is essentially the same design as the 33, but 6" longer body for about 43% more internal volume. (FWIW the 48 is called a "hemi" muffler, and was intended for big blocks such as on motorhomes and the like).

The 48 is perfect for me, a mellow throb at idle, a nice growl upon accel, and no drone on the highway. I like it a lot. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/notooth.gif" alt="" />

You would want at least a 2.25" pipe, as that is the minimum internal diameter of the muffler. I'm not sure if 2.5" gains you anything over 2.25". The guy who did the work said the inlet pipe from the Y to the muffler was 2.25", but the tailpipe was 2".

Just to clarify, did you use a resonator or just changed the tail pipe size diameter?

My PV is still sitting on my garage floor, I tried to have it installed once but the guy refused to have it done since I am about to go thru MV inspection and he said that MV will fail the truck for noise. I have since passed the inspection and now contemplating whether to have it done now or wait until spring. I have some reservations too since the oem one is very quiet. This is not a good news.

Hi Mike...how's the ECB bull bar working out. I had an experience much like Big Swedes, only my original choice was a Magnaflow. It performed great with its straigth flow thru design, but it was obniouxsly loud at idle and around town. I added a glass pack resonator, but saw little improvement. Finally, a friend recommended a muffler shop that sells a lot of Dynomax. He told me the Super Turbo was by far the best choice he recommended for increased performance and mild noise. I chose the longer body as well and I couldn't be more pleased. It sounded better than I thought and performance is better in mid 3000's RPM range...great for highway merges and passing. Otherwise, you barely even know it's there. Good luck. Oh yea, I also increased tailpipe from cat back to 2.5".

Well, after about 2.5 months of use the sound is still great. It is not noisy, but at certain gear/acceleration combinations it puts out a mellow tone. I am using the 17748 model and running 2.5" pipe from the cats back with a 2.5" tailpipe, all welded. I would get this muffler again.

Sadly I had to get rid of my 1996 Trooper 3.2L due to a rusted frame.

My 2.5" $14.95 SummitRacing turbo muffler sounds great.

Thanks for all the input. I think this is going to be my next muffler. I want something with a mellow tone upon acceleration, but quiet on the highway. I am glad to hear that this muffler seems to do that. I will just have to decide 2.25" or 2.5" pipe.

With the PV 2 muffler I have a 2.5" pipe going from the y to the muffler and from that I have a 2" tail pipe exiting through a 2.5" tip. Initially I had 2.5 pipe all the way from the cats to the tip. This was way too loud and embarrassing. Any acceleration and you could not talk in the truck. After serching through the vehicrossinfo site I decided to switch my tail pipe to 2". This helped quite a bit. Now under acceleration you just have to yell to be heard. I put on the tip for some looks since the truck had a deeper tone to it. The 2" tip just looked silly.

The muffler is nice and deep at idle and with little acceleration. Anything above 1800 rpm and it sounds like a scream instead of a growl. Part of that is because it is a V6 and not a V8. Another problem could be the placement of the muffler. the shop put it on slightly forward of where the stock muffler was. It is just too loud for a Trooper IMHO. It is very loud in the truck and like I said acceleration makes it louder.

I was home for the weekend and asked my brother to drive my truck while i followed. I must say that it is not quiet cruising either. I knew it was loud since I can hear it in the truck, but didn't realize how loud. Initial acceleration sounds good, but then it get high pitched. Even just criusing I could hear the truck from 2 carlengths away and it didn't matter if I was infront or behind the truck. The sound was loudest next to the truck like where the muffler is.

John, The ECB is doing great. I like the look up there on the front of the truck.
