22RE engine swap #343676 11/07/03 09:55 PM

I have and 86 P/U and an 86 4runner, both with 22RE engines. The P/U has a rebuilt engine but a beat body and the 4runner has a great body but a beat engine. So next weekend I'm going to swap the engines. I've never done this before and don't know what to anticipate or what new parts I need to have on hand to make the swap go faster. The truck also has a clutch with less than 20,000 on it and I'm wondering if I should put it in the 4runner while I'm doing this or if that is just a bad idea. I do have help and a shop with pneumatic tools and a cherry picker, but no prior experience with this. Any suggestions or heads up? About how long should I expect this to take me. Regardless, this will be cool to learn myself and I'll have a great 4runner when I'm done.

Body Damage is Cool
Hey, I just replied to your toyotanation post, but I'll reply here too as you will get more replies here. You might want to look into swapping the body rather than the engine. I don't know anything about it though.

You also might want to post this next door on the 4wheeling board because those guys know more about your older truck.

If you have to ask about a SAS, you're not ready for it.

Toyota engines are simple to swap out, just make sure you take the engine harness loose at the computer (behind the pass side kick panel, bolts to remove are 10mm) instead of at the engine. Just unplug, and pull through the firewall take out with the engine. Makes it alot easier than taking off all the plug ins on the engine. There are only a couple vacuum hoses, wiring from the coil side (plug, and alternator connections. All bolts on the toyota are pretty much 17, 14, 12, 10, big bolts at transmission are 17, small are 14, get some wobble extensions to reach the top 2 17mm bolts, put a bunch together, and loosen from where you have room, you can buy the cheap ones from walmart, about $10. Ratchet wrenches help too taking off the starter, also the fuel line on the fuel filter(located under the intake ) is 17mm. Have fun.
