Getting the Wheeling Fever
Well its been a little longer than the three weeks I thought it would take to do this engine swap
but trying to make a living got in the way of having fun.
There was also a lot more changes nessisary that I originaly though (always).
The Diesel / Jeep has been on the road for about two weeks and its FANTASTIC!
I filled the tank the first day ( very strange standing at the pump putting diesel into a vehicle your used to putting gas into. Had to stop and think about what I was doing a few times).
It now has over 400km on it and the fuel gauge is finnaly getting down to 3/4!!!
Lots of power, a little slower off the line than the 4L gas was but more power once the turbo spools up.
Put a fair bit of lead / foam sound deadner on the fire wall / tunnel but its still a but noisy at higher RPM.
Have not got the Jeep tack working yet, have to figure out the Jeep sender requirments first.
My web page wount be updated untill the first week of Dec but then Ill get the latest pic's up.
The under hood shot is kind of cool, very full.
Once I get a fuel milage I'll post it.
The engine has a "tack" sender on the injector pump, does anyone know what it puts out?
Its a two wire unit and the Jeep is a three wire, not much chance they will "talk" to one another
but it might be worth a try.

Great to hear about your conversion. I've been watching with great interest. I suggest you put a "Diesel" label inside the fuel filler cap. Someone WILL get it wrong someday. Yep, it will be slower off the mark, but the tourque is where diesels are best. Like manovering around your garage or parking without any gas pedal at all. You will notice good enigne braking and I would be most interested to hear your impressions off road, much better control over all. Sorry I can't help with the tack. Good luck...

Hi All,
Diesels are very noisy in the air intake, are you using an Isuzu (diesel) air box set-up, if not I believe Chevy V8 diesels have an air silencer in there air system, mite be worth a trip to the wreckers.
Many years ago I had a Toyota diesel in a Mity van, the air cleaner made more noise than the exhaust, fitted a Nissan silencer and that knocked the noise back a lot,

Thanks for the intake noise thoughts, I will look into it. All I have is a big K&N filter on the end of the turbo
inlet pipe. It is right behind the grill but open on the sides.
I finnaly got down to almost half a tank of fuel yesterday and refilled it.
Works out to about 12km/L or about 35MPG, It has slightly taller tires on it so its hard to be right on.
This is a huge improvment over the 4L gas.
It is very nice to drive, all the tranny gears work well although I mosly leave it in 5th once I'm on the highway.
Even large hills are not a problem in 5th once you are doing 100km/hr.
I would not do this conversion again unless someone had a stupid amount of $$ to through at it.
Finding another engine would also be difficult unless you just bought a new industrial unit (about $5000us).
I'll let you know how the air box noise solution works.

I don't know where you are getting that from, if set up right it shouldn't be much more noise than a gas engine. I wouldn't be using the word 'noisy'. The exhaust should be more 'noisy'.

Ouch, thats gotta hurt. I can get second hand 4JB1-T's non intercooled over here for $2500 (~$US1500), and adding an intercooler is no problem. Hell you could buy a whole 4JB1-T MU for $US5000 over here, that and the 3.1L MU's too.

Yeah, they eat hills for breakfast, but if someone is going slow and you drop the revs and lose the turbo boost it's hard to get it back.

Try some off road stuff and see how it holds the revs. I've climed up river banks wondering why it would only hold the revs and not accelerate... it was in third.

Hi James,
Pull the air cleaner out of a four-cylinder diesel and start it up, the noise from the intake is very loud (turbo engine a quieter than non turbo), the Toyota I fitted in a van was non-turbo.
I have a Nissan bus 3.3 litre turbo (4 Cyl, 120hp) factory vehicle the air intake noise at idle is quite high more so when standing beside the bus.
Why do Nissan LD28 engines have air silencers James?

It's obvious we have differant impresions of whats noisy. It's just when I hear any diesel engine running even if you can hear the intake it's not the dominate sound.

I'll shut up now and give EVguy his topic back.

Robert,I did all the leg work on importing an Isuzu 3.1L TD from Aussie Land last year, before I decided on doing the MH. It was going to cost $6000.00 U.S. for a COMPLETE engine, rad,IC, wireing harness everything and shipping was around $650.00.

Just thought I'd add that tid bit of info here. I think a 300 tdi would be easier on the pocket book for us USA guys. Even with the hassels of the conversion. Since the 2.2 TD are getting so rare here.

But I hear Isuzu is planning to introduce a killer TDI motor here in 2005. I also heard.......Aw never mind,I'll keep that one under my hat a little longer.
