Getting the Wheeling Fever
I'm still having problems with my truck not starting! It is still clicking instead of turning over intermitently. It just won't do it when I can pop the hood and check it out. I've replaced the starter, checked grounds and battery. Their is plenty of juice getting to it when it does turn over. Is their a relay or solinoid before the one on the starter that could be starting to fail? Help....?

Did you replace the starter with a new or rebuilt one, or did you install a used one? Probably the most common problem with starters is worn contacts (actually just one of them wears). I mildly recall there being something else that can cause the starter to just click, but I forget what it is. Also, if the charging system isn't working properly or the battery is bad, the starter may not be getting enough juice. Usually that is not an intermittent problem and there are other signs and symptoms such as the charge and brake lights being on.

I replaced the starter with a new one and a new battery. This is the second new starter that I've put in trying to cure this gremlin.

If either is low, trace that circuit back. What sort of starter was installed? Did you check the solenoid contacts on the old or new starter? Do you have the neutral start switch?

Cables, cables, cables....I don't know how many good starters I've seen go to the trash dump because someone had loose, corroded, or nastified positive or negative battery cables.

Okay then, cables it is. It'll be a good project for Saturday. Beside, the cables on it now are on the crusty side. I haven't had the chance to put a meter on it when it acts up, it's being way to sneaky for that, it makes sure to act up when we're busy.

I recently had a click when trying to start my 4runner. I took out my starter and replaced the contacts (1 was worn). I also cleaned the plunger and 12v supply cable that connects to the starter with a dremel. I also cleaned the connector on the solenoid and the cable that connects to it with a small steel brush. Then cleaned the battery connections and it works great now. Maybe cleaning all your electrical connections real good will help.

I,ve seen this same problem with 2 of my friends toyotas, the starter is good, the cables are good. The problem is with the fusible link on the ignition wire that goes from the positive side of the battery to the underhood fuse box. Hope this helps.

on the serious side, my Toy did the same when I first brought it home, I changed the cables (they were nastified too) and havent had any problems since.
