Took my truck for its maiden voyage after I bought it.The tranny wont shift past third until it warms up.After about2 miles it will shift all the way to overdrive.I've been told this is normal. Is this true or do I have a problem? If so what do I look for? Thanks for any advice

That is exactly right. They do not shift in to overdrive until the temperature comes up. This is normal and nothing to worry about.

don't worry about this normally the change of 3r to over drive if it does not have the temperature necessary to work not does it, I recommend you that verify if the thermostat it's coolant system because some times it is reason not to have the temperature that needs the transmission oil
