I've searched the board, as well as the car up and down, and it seems that the 12 pin connector is playing hooky!! Haynes says that it's below the intrument cluster, and to the left of the center console, but I can't find it to save my life. Any clues?

Well, it turns out that I don't need the ALDL to check the engine codes as there is a jumper near the ECM that will output the codes for me. The wire is blue and white, and it has a spade terminal with a clear boot connector to plug it into. Checked the codes, and it came back with an error in the VSS. My first thought is that there is a wire loose from the tranny, and short of that I guess that the sensor has gone bad. Anyone else had a code 24 VSS error, and what was the outcome?

Even funkier, but a lesson learned....

My problems with the code 24 started yesterday, after replacing the instrument cluster from just a speedo and idiot lights, to one with full gauges. Since I wanted to retain the original odometer (with the correct mileage) I switched this out from the old unit, into the new one. One thing that had to be used from the new unit was the electrical connector that attached to the back of the speedo/odometer. Well, it turns out that this is the VSS, and this picks up the signals from the speedo and feeds them to the ECM. The new/replacement unit seems to be bad as this only started after the switch. So it looks like I'll have another round of dash disassembly so that I can put the original VSS back into the speedo cluster.

I can say this, it takes a little time to swap out these two clusters if you plan on moving your original odometer over to the new cluster. For one, the trip counter reset button is in a slightly different location, which will require a swap. The position of the VSS is different, which will require a little moving/bending/fabrication. As an aside, the fuel gauge is now one that keeps it's place when the ignition is turned off. Also, the speedo needle uses a pin rather than a post to attach.

Lesson learned, hopefully not only for myself, but for others. I still needed to go back into the gauges in order to paint the needles, as they have all faded, as well as adjusting the speedo needle since it's off by 5 mph, so I guess that this project will be moved up a bit. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Does the replacement cluster have less miles than your original? The reason I'm asking is I was told the Isuzu odemeter is really easy to advance. I know this is second hand info but wanted to point it out to you. I've never done it but since you have one out of the truck on the bench maybe you could experiment a little. If it turns out to be true then you could just use the new cluster intact. Let us know if this myth is true or not.

Actually, the replacement cluster had more miles <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />. I tried to advance it around to match the original odometer, but I couldn't find an easy way to do it. I will still have to go back into the gauge one more time, as the VSS is still off. I think it came from when I switched out the needles, and the transducer from the new cluster is causing the problem. I'll switch back to the original transducer and hopefully this will stop the check engine light from coming on.
