Okay, I've been trying to get an e-locker third to replace my noisy rear diff in my 1989 4Runner. Why just repair when you can upgrade? I have 4.10 ratio, 22RE, Manual Hubs.

I finally got the e-locker third... But it's a 4.30 ratio. Of course, the salvage yard said it was 4.10, even claimed to have counted the teeth (out of state salvage yard, part was shipped to me sight unseen), but 43 divided by 10 is 4.30, I don't care how new the math is. I have had a really hard time finding an e-locker third in 4.10 (I guess I actually haven't found one yet) and I can't find one in 4.56 (tried for about two months). So, the question is, what are my chances of finding an IFS diff that will fit in my truck in 4.30? I've got to do something soon about that noise in my rear end (uh, my truck's rear end, that is), and although I'm not crazy about changing out the front diff as well for a 5% lower gear ratio, I'm at my wits end. So, will the front IFS third or full diff from a 3rd gen fit in my first gen? Did they put 4.30 gears in 1st gens? Or do you guys think that I can still find an e-locker third in 4.10? Or do you think it would be better off (cheaper) to just regear the one I managed to find? If I do that, I'll have to pay someone to do it (man, I hate that) and I'll go 4.56 (31" tires) and score a used front diff from somebody.

Hey, thanks in advance for reading this, even if you can't help out. It's nice just to be able to rant about it to people who understand, since my wife and most of my friends just glaze over when I start talking about it!

Runnerman----I happen to have a V6 4.10 third that I took out of my 88 Runner recently but it's just a 4 pinion open diff. Wanna trade?
Or.......I do professional gear installs if you go to the trouble of sending the 3rd and a new US GEAR brand 410 ratio.

your 1989 front end is a 7.5" ring gear.....I see no reason why a 2nd gen wouldn't work....unsure about a 3rd gen. You should be able to find a 410 e-locker in a first gen.....or just get a 430 front 3rd in a 1st gen I think it's available.

As much as I think that trading my e-locker third for an open third would be a great deal, I just can't make myself do it! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

I'd love to ship the diff to you to re-gear, but I wonder if I might accidentally get an open diff back? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" />

I think if I decide to regear the e-locker I'll keep it close by.

I got just the thing for ya.... <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
I got an e-locker that I regeared to 5.29. It originally came with....you've guessed it...4:10.
Make me an offer I can't refuse.... <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/butwiggle.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/notooth.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/notooth.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/notooth.gif" alt="" />

I'm in California I got the orginal Yukon gear box that I can just shipped too.

Having said that, if you want to run 33's I would go ahead and get 4.88 or 5.29 for 35's assumming you have 5 spd.

I just might have to make you an offer on those gears! But I've got to check with the salvage yard on Monday to see if they have a 4.10 set to send to me. You see, the guy on the phone said that he had two e-locker thirds, one was 4.30 and one was 4.10. He promised to send me the 4.10 version. The one I have is marked 4.10, but it is clearly a 4.30 (10 teeth on the pinion, 43 on the ring gear). Maybe they accidentally shipped me the wrong one. I'm glad to hear that you got one that was originally 4.10, since I was afraid that only 4.30's were available in salvage yards. That means there is still hope for me to be able to do this without regearing.

As far as regearing, well, if I have to re-gear at all I may just go 4.56 to match my 31's. I probably won't go much bigger than that for tires because I don't think I'll need to for the trails I run, and the wife already complains about having to get into the truck while wearing a dress.

But I will definitely keep you in mind, since I'm trying to do this as cheaply as possible right now.

Here's what you can do.
Get a front diff from an automatic v6 86-95 4runner/truck.... the auto's come with a 4.30 gear and will work (just fine) for ya. just do a straight out swap. Then sell the 4.10 for more than you paid for the 4.30 and recoup some money from the e-locker <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />.

There are definitely factory 4.30 IFS front diffs out there. In addition to the one mentioned above, they were also found in some 5spd V6 2nd gen 4runners (maybe with the 31" tire option?).

Actually, if you're interested, I can check with my dad, he may still have the 4.30 front diff from his 95 4runner, and if so I'm sure he'd be happy to sell it off.

I might take you up on that front diff Luke M. I'll have to wait until I talk with the salvage yard, though. I just don't know if I want to spend any money to get 5% lower gearing. How much would you think he would want for it?
