No Clutch Peddal/ All fluid leaked out #367609 12/23/03 10:43 AM

My truck is a 1986 Toyota 4-Runner, 22RE Engine, 5 speed manual trans. I went shopping last week, and when I got into my truck to go home, the clutch peddal went straight to the floor. Luckily being a country girl and all, I was smart enough to drive it home by forcing the gears. What is the correct term for "Slave Cyllander"? Is that what has gone out? How do I fix it? Help Help Help Help!!!! I am a very resourseful girl, I have been known to do light maintenance work on my truck from time to time. Please, someone respond, I am in a fix. I am the only one with a vehicle in my family, It's fixin' to be christmas, and we all have a lot of important doctors visits comming up in the next week. We have no money to fix it, and if we did, the job (if it's the slave cyllander) isn't worth over $20.00 in my opinion. Someone have some christmas compassion please

Can you tell us a little more about your rig? Year/model/engine

It definately sounds like the slave to me. Mine went out on my commuter a few years ago. I have a feeling the Hilux will give up the ghost pretty soon.
Using my '83 Hilux as an example, a rebuild kit including the piston costs $17 at AutoZone. A new cylinder is $30. It's far easier to replace the cylinder than rebuilding it.
If your rig is newer, it may cost more. But that will put you in the ballpark.

Just did mine a few days ago so its still fresh in my head....

Real simple process, located on the right side of the tranny, loosen the fluid line (3/8 wrench), undo 2 bolts holding it on the the tranny (i think they are 12mm), then it will drop down further and it makes it a lot easier to undo the fluid line.

The new cylinder didn't come with the pin that pushes the clutch fork so you may have to pull it out of the old one.

Finally, bolt the new one on and bleed the line with fluid.

Did this for my 89'4runner, EFI, 5-speed...cost me about 30 bucks(CDN) and half hour of my time. Fortunately i caught it before it drained completely.

Check you carpet under the clutch pedal, master cylinders tend to go on these before the slave cylinders do. If your carpet or floor is slippery and wet, the seal blew on the master and only fix is a replacement. Cost about $40 at Napa for a new unit.

Mine was definitely the slave, there was a nice fluid trail running down the side of the tranny and all over my driveway.

Question: My clutch pedal has a wicked squeek, seems to be intermittent, is it just crying for some grease?

Imagine hearing that everytime you shift, damn its annoying.

Well I got some great news for you, I just saved a buttload of money by switching to Geico.

Actually, you may want to look up under your dash and see what the problem is. 40% on the return springs needed some grease around the pins, 60% its the actual master cylinder piston squeeking along the inside of the bore. The master and slave go hand in hand, when one fails its usually not long after that the other fails. All ya can really do is hunker down and take a look at whats up.
