Clutch slave and master cylinder

My 90 Wrangler's clutch is leaking fluid, and im having a hard time pinning down where the leak is comming from. Im thinking about replacing the master and slave cylinder since both are 14 years old. Can anyone tell me whats going on inside the slave cylinder, since it appears to be inside the tranny housing its hard to get a good look at it. Anyone have any good tips on this. Thanks james

the slave is fairly easy just disconnect the lines, remove the tranny and it has a little pin thing that hold it on pull the retainer and the slave just comes out you put the new one in put on the new retainer and put the tranny and lines back together and you are done just bleed and go.

But if what you own is a large ELM tree like me, changing the clutch assembly can be a *****. The cylinder is unlike any other I have seen. It has a hole in the middle of the cylinder through which the tranny shaft passes. Get it? the cylinder looks like a long black donut. So what we ALL do is to purchase a KIT that has the clutch, pressure plate, cylinder and the alignment tool for reassembly. About $150. most places. Without the needed tranny Jack there is a lot of lifting and pushing, but we have all done it. Big Jim I know Maggie Valley well. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />

So what your saying is that to replace the clutch slave cylinder i need to pull the tranny? if thats the case then this is a bit more involved that i was hoping. Its a 4.2L wrangler, how do i know which tranny is under it? thanks james

its the BX-5, ax-15 didn't come out till the 4.0.
it's easy to me i can change one in 45 minutes now with a floor jack and an impact wrench, then again i have removed the tranny from a YJ 8 times so....

Sunder, you know I respect you. I have to go with BigJim here. This dude needs to do the whole deal, clutch and all. You can't go around replacing the slave cylinder on a 14 year old original trans without doing it all. It makes no sense. It's almost like doing a one sided wheel rebuild. You KNOW what's gonna go next, right ? Maybe BigJim could get over there and show this guy how to go about it.

Additionally, in my 1990 YJ, I have the AX-15. It's a common replacement, or so I'm told. This guy best make sure what he has. Easy enough, if you can find the tag. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />

if you want to replace the master you can.. or get a rebuild, but if its leaking from there you should ba able to see it no probelem. the masters on the jeeps are fairly decent as long as you keep it full and contaminent free i think 14 years is just fine. but the slave on the other hand... those usually fail alot, 14 years is a long life time for one of those on a jeep, i'd almost consider the jeep slave/throwout a manufacture defect worthy of a recall.

The clutch seems to work fine, and there is no slip init. The is also no noticable noise from the tranny that i could relate to a throwout bearing. No wirring when the clutch is in. Is it a situation where the slave leaks fluid into the bearing when it starts leaking? james

jeep, being the infinitly wise company that they are, decided that they wanted a slave cylender and throw out bearing in one. so when one fails you get to replace the whole thing. i've never actually had a throw out bearing fail on a jeep with an all-in-one unit, only the slave fails. it such a stupid waste of money and time i just wish they would have stuck with what works. at least they still understand that solid axles are the way to go on the trails.
