Vibration & clicking in front end #376902 01/09/04 05:57 PM

Well, the rear vibration (caused by loose nut in yoke) is now fixed (thanx Roger and Frank).
I now have a new one ('86 runner)...
We got a little ice and snow last night, so I locked in the hubs and threw her in 4WD. Well, when I turn right in 4WD there is a clicking sound in the front end (sounds like my lock-rite except I don't have one in the front <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" />). Is it the hub?
When I shift gears, there is also a thump that is not there when in 2WD. When I take it out of 4WD but leave the hubs locked, there is a driveline vibration about 40 mph. Any ideas?
TIA,
Ace

Could be one of the CV joints.

Ace,

Ditto on the CV. My Taco does the same thing. I didn't clamp the CV boot tight enough and the grease is more or less leaked out. You should be able to pick up a left over SAS one for a couple bucks on the pirate board or for sale section. There is a guy in MD who just SAS'd who might have one available. Shoot me an email at mike@mikeharan.net and I'll send you his info.

I highly doubt it is the lockout.

My CV's click in 4wd if I have the t-bars cranked. Because they click doesn't necessarily mean they are bad, or at least need to be replaced.

As for the clunk it could be a number of things. I'd say try to see if there is play in the front drive shaft. Also, check the diff mounts.

I had a similar clunk in my front end, and it ended up being the front mount where the front diff mounts to the crossmember. The nut had vibrated loose and was very close to falling off the bolt!

Great, Thanx for the input guys. I finally got a Kerosene heater for the garage yesterday so I can get to working on her. I'll let you know what it was when I find out.
