Raider went to the shop today. He will be rebuilding motor but asked if he should put in a crank kit. He recommended it and it will add $200 to the cost of rebuild. I gave him the go ahead. What is that and why do I need it. Yes, I know what a crank is but this is my first motor I am having rebuilt. I always did top end stuff my self but nothing more than swapping motors out in other makes. Thanks

If he is rebuilding your motor he should be telling you if you need a crank kit or not.

A good start is an inspection of your crankshaft. Many times if a bearing has not spun or the motor has been run out of oil the crank can be used with just a polishing.

Measure the crank to see if it is in spec (or send it out to the machine shop and they will measure it for you).

I prefer to use the crank that came out of the motor if its in good shape. That way you know its not some trashed out then rewelded boat anchor. smile

This of course assumes you have a decent local shop to grind or polish the crank if it needs it.

It will be torn down on Wednesday, I'll go see whats up then. I used today to get it down there so I wouldn't have my car hauler behind me in rush hour traffic.
