Strange noise in front end only when cold!! Help! #387177 01/26/04 04:14 AM

Hi all,

I have a strange bearing like "werring" noise coming from my front drivers side only when the truck is really cold from sitting. Its weird because sometimes it will not happen, then I turn right and it happens.. it gets louder with speed (very loud), it sounds just like the truck is in 4wd low, you know that loud bearing noise that increases with speed.. It goes away if I turn to the left and may or may not come back when I turn back to the right. If it does happend when it does happen when going straight, if I put the truck in 4wd high it seems to make the noise stop, then I put it back in 2wd.

Once the truck is warmed up (driving for a few miles) the noise is gone. Any idea what could cause this? wheel bearing?
Of course I am just about to put the truck up for sale and now this happens..

Its a 1994 xtra cab v6 4x4 SR5 PU, 100% stock

The fact that it goes away when you shift weight back and forth makes me think it's the wheel bearings. I had a car do that exact same thing, and it was the wheel bearings.

Make certian that you're hubs are both unlocked and that the truck is in 2WD. Easiest way to do that is to grab the CV shaft and spin it by hand. If they rotate freely, you're definitely in 2WD. This is to make sure you don't have a worn out CV: If the front CV joints aren't spinning, they won't make any noise. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Easiest way to check the wheel bearings is to grab a jack and lift up the left front corner. Once the weight is off the tire, grab it and try to rock it up and down. If it moves at all, it's probably the wheel bearings, as long as you don't see the knuckle rocking too: In which case it's a worn out balljoint or something similar. If the wheel can rock up and down while the knuckles doesn't move, your bearings are worn excessively.

Bearing/Bushing in the spindle, some IFS have a needle type bearing that the axle runs on, may be going out may just need to be cleaned and lubed!!!!

Oops! Yeah. For some reason I was thinking he had an 86. A 94 would have ADD and the shafts spin all the time, so it could be what you said or even a bad CV, although they don't usually change pitch when weights shifts side-to-side - wheelbearings frequently do that.

I am doubting that it is bearing related, as you say that it comes and goes with 4wd and 2wd.
I was thinking power steering pump. You say it happens when it is cold and goes away when it warms up. You also say it make noise when you turn the wheel.
The reason I mention this is because my Dodge truck is doing this now and I half to put up with it until I can check the fluid level.

my 90 does it right now, not sure if its the same noise, my power steering pump is on the passenger side. I spray it with WD-40 every week. Too cheap to replace right now, steelhead are biting
