I did several searches...but here's my question. '99 Trooper just hit 100K and valve ticking becoming more noticeable. I will try Mobile 1, but not sure if I should start out 0W30, 5W30, or 10W30...or if it even matters.

Reason for my question is the hot, humid climate here and several posts I read about TSB and starting off with 0W30.
Thoughts anyone?

Body Damage is Cool
If you would take a look into their specs, you would find that
all those Mobil1 oils are actually virtually the same
product, with minor differences, and all of them are
mutually compatible. Do not worry and use whatever you want.

I agree. They are all a 30wt at operating temp, so go with whatever is easiest to get for you. I know in my area any 0w-XX is near impossible to get over the counter.

AutoZone here on Long Island stocks 0w/30. You would think in a colder place like where you are would be an easier find.

As for oil weight, I'm using 5w/30 mobil 1 as that's what the dealer puts in. I've been using it since the first oil change and now have about 33,000 on the engine with no issues. At first I was losing no oil what so ever but the last 6k miles, I've been losing about 1/2 quart every 3k miles. I'm not too worried as I have remote start now so I think the extended warm up times might be eating the oil more. Can't complain for a three year old vehicle.

Cheers,
Con

Getting the Wheeling Fever
i've used mostly 10w30 becaused it seemed to cover the most conditions around here, according to the manual. i'm currently running 5w30 (winter time) and i believe i'm noticing an increase in oil consumption. coincidence or just paying closer attention than in the past, i don't know.

anywho, 10w30 is my vote for no good reason.

Well, most of what I have read around here has recommended 0 or 5 W30 becuase it (for whatever reason) helps with the valve knock. I didn't pay attention this time when I changed my oil and ended up with 10W30 and the knock is back for me. So personal experience says 0 or 5 W30 is the way to go.

When I had the valve tick I used 5w30, but that was a blend and it still went away. Now I am on 10w30 full synthetic and no knocks or sounds, (thats when the tranny was in the truck and the clutch not pulled out.)
