Transfer Case noise in 89 4runner #394228 02/06/04 04:28 AM

I have an '89 V6 auto 4runner. When I put it in 4wd a knocking sound comes from the transfer case. Sometimes it is a rubbing sound and sometimes it is a knocking sound. I'm assuming that I have to replace the transfer case. I have found them used from $150-$750 used on line. Any tips with this would be greatly appreciated.

You might want to take a look at the Factory Service Manual (FSM) and see what's what before you shell out cash for a used one. It might be almost as easy, and cheap, to fix yours. Also, be sure you don't have a bent shroud or such that is in close proximity to the CV joint of your front driveshaft. You could be 'ticking' a zerk or the CV body.

Need a Spot
I have the same problem with my 88 auto. I had it checked yesterday and AAMCO quoted $1000 for labor only on a rebuild. Found another auto transmission down in Denver for $500. I thought the transfercase and transmission were integral? Can a transfercase be bought separately?

I have a manual tranny and two transfercases in the garage right now, just not sure I want to do the swap right now.

Any suggestions or answers to the transmission question? Thanks.

Can any of the experts on this board let me know if the transfer case can be separated on the A340H? I know on the labor chart, it says the whole tranny has to be pulled and it is integral? Any help appreciated.

Arent' the v6 tcases chain driven or something? If so, you might want to check into that, I'm sure the chain or whatever drives that could get stretched and clang around in there.

Since you are new, I have to ask this.
Are you using 4wd on a hard surface where it should not be needed? If so, that is your problem.
I don't know squat about automatic transmissions and their tcases, except yes the tcase has a chain not gears. I also know tcase problems are rare on toyota trucks unless they have been run dry or otherwise abused.
Do check for driveshaft rubbing - the dust shield on the front driveshaft CV is not hard to bend...
