Finished lift kit, now have drive shaft vibration #398268 02/12/04 07:28 AM

First I put the lift kit (4" superlift kit) on the front end of my 83 CJ7 and drove it till the next weekend when I put the rear half on. Everything was fine with only the front on. Now, with the rear on I get a vibration from the drive shaft it seems at around 40 and up. The when I let off the gas I hear a noise like a 10 speed bike would make when you are coasting only heavier, click click click click.... etc.

The kit came with a transfer case drop kit but I didn't install it. Others I have talked to said they didn't use the transfer case drop kit.

Has anyone else had this problem or can anyone give a comment or help?

Thanks,

you have excessive drivline angles in the rear. you can either replace the drive shaft witha cv shaft( the right way to do it, expensive though) or you can install the T-Case lowering kit(wrong way) and live with minimal vibrations.

What's a CV Shaft and how expensive are we talking? What does the CV shaft do that the current one doesn't?

Body Damage is Cool
install the drop kit and make sure the pinion angle matches the t-case output angle. you may have to shim the rear end. do it as soon as possible. it's easy to do. it will save your u joints until you research and find a cv style shaft. i don't like to think of it as the "wrong" way just the "alternative" way. it's more p c. or whatever you would call it. man, a statement like that might make you think "I" was the one from california. see, i don't like to think of myself as broke, just financially challenged. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />

you didn't mention if you put in the shims that came with the kit (a 4" lift should have come with shims).
put in the lowering kit and use the shims to get your angles right. plenty of people have put in 4 inch lifts without cv shafts and had no problems at all. if it's already clicking you should replace the u joints now.
it's easier now then later. and if you have those crappy straps on the u-joints you might want to replace them with ubolts. i was going through joints every six months till somebody told me to switch to the u bolts( i got good at replacing u-joints tho)
good luck
