OK wisen me up, I want to eventually do the 7m swap. The problem is my old g-52 took a dump this morning and locked up. How hard is it to upgrade to the w-56 in an '84 pu. Second question, I had a link to an importer in the LA area, but I can't seem to find it. Can any one enlighten me to a good source for engines and trans?? Thanks Ben Actually, the W56 should fit right in. It uses a different type of transfer case shifter in some years, though. I believe the '92-95 W56s were of the same forward shifting configuration as the G52s, so they would probably fit without modifying the floor. Earlier W56s used top-shifting t-cases (shifter was on top of t-case instead of on the back of the trans). I think the shift forks are different in the t-cases for the W trans and the G trans, so you'll need the t-case to go with your new W56.

What kind of wacky plumbing is going on in this picture? I see a skinny line going from the thermostat housing back to the firewall and heater hoses to some kind of heat exchanger? Is that one of those hot shower thingies?
Matt yes,it seems everyone in ROTR is making those..there are a bunch of little copper lines running inside the big one.its a homemade warm shower thing( forget the "tech term" its called the antifreeze runs through it to warm up the tubes, then ya run your water through it and the hot tubes warm your shower up for ya

Coper pipe is the shower heat exchanger. Green lines are garen hose for the shower fresh( creek) water. The small line from the T stat housing is a mechanicle temp guage, I am also still running the fatory electric.
I had the mechanicle one lying around. I wish the line was a little longer. It tells me what temp the coolant comeing out of the engine is. the factory tells me block temp. It is a little usefull, but not nesasary.
I ned to get the intake away from the exhausst. I plan to put some type of snorkle on it.

Thanks Paul and SUV for letting me jump into your thread. My truck's an '84. Wouldn't that be the same as an '87 as far as engine compartment clearance for a 7m swap?? Second question. The bell housing for a w-56. Are all 22-r bell housings the same?? toyota redesigned the 22-r from '84 to '85 and I'm wondering if they changed anything as far as bellhousings, flywheels, etc that will effect me. Third, has anyone used "usedjapaneseengines.com"?? Are they reliable and fair??? Was thinking of using them to source my tranny and xfer case. Any thoughts and input is greatly appreciated. Thanks Ben

I believe you 84 would have the same engine bay. I'm not 100% suresince I don't have one here to measure.
To put the engine in you will need the belhousing, clutch flywheel and fork for the Supra motor. It bolts directly to the W56 trans All the 22R engines have the same bolt patern on the block. 20R 22R 22RE 22RTE, still an R block. diferenc will be in the trans. W or G. So the SUpra engines are 5MGE and 7MGE 7MGTE. All are a M block. So you use a belhousing from a M block to W trans. Here is where it gets fun. To put a 7M in your engine bay you need the motormount pieces from the 5M. The originated from back in the day of the Celica Supra. ( Not sure what M sieries engine) Remember when the Celicas had R sieries engines just like the trucks. That is the main reason this swap works so well.
Not sure about your link, but I plan to check them out.
I ordered my Radiator today. Got a 19H X 26W 2 row cross flow. Had the fill cut out and welded shut. Cost me $25 extra for thet, but it would have cost me $200 extra to make it with a tank not drilled to set up the machiene I guess. I also ordered my fill pipe for in the top hose. A cast one was $25 and the Alum was $20. I got the Alum. All I think my bill will be about $215 with shipping. I guess I will wait till next week to start cutting.

Have any of you guys thought about using the R154 trans from the turbo supra?
86.5-92 NA supras had the W56 87-92 Turbo had R154
the R154 might be a better choice, its ALOT stronger (I know a few supra guys running 500+hp through them) It's just a beefier trans, but I don't know if you'd be able to graft the t-case onto it. If you're planning on doing turbo motor, don't expect that w56 to last too long.
If we knew what we were doing, it wouldn't be research

Thanks Paul for the rapid reply. I believe the '84 through '88 are all the same body. Thanks for the expanation on the bell housing issue and the refresher on the 5m & 22r interchange. I was never clear on the bell housing stuff. Question, where are you obtaining your radiator?? Are you mail-ordering or using a local suppier?? Thanks, Ben

A friend who owns a body shop, and runs a race car (dirt track) is getting me my radiator. My Dad helps him work on his race car, been friends since school. He likes the roundy rounds.
So its hard to say where I am getting it. I just stopped in his shop, he gave me a catalog. I picked it,and he called them to take the filler out.
