2G Troopers... #399412 02/14/04 04:19 AM

Ok... I am back on looking for a 2G trooper... I need to make an informed decision on this one, so I have a few questions about them...

How high will I have to lift it to bolt on my 33x12.50s?

Will I have to do a ball joint flip (again)?

What is the towing capacity of a 2G with a 3.2?

What are the pros and cons of the 2G troopers?

I really like my 1G Troop, and don't want to trade up to a newer model... Primarily because I am a bit afraid that they "Toned it down" to be better for soccer moms. Are the 2Gs tough trucks too? Are they as trail worthy as the 1Gs?

I do like the bodystyle a bit better, and if it is more comfortable, then that is a plus as well.

Any and all information about the 2G Troopers, and how they compare to the 1G Troopers would be greatly appreciated.

I would like to hear from both sides... Perhaps someone has had both and can share the pros and cons of each.

Thanks in advance for the help!

I previously had a 92 DOHC Troop. I loved it until the power steering leak that was not visible because it was collecting in the alternator shorted the alternator thereby spiking my tranny computer and resulting in a $1500 repair happened. (run-on intended)

Having said that, I would like to say that I still kick myself for selling it. I now own a '90 2.6L and I love it as well. The power difference between the two is amazing, but the comfort is the same (the seats still suck). If I had to do my shopping again, I would probably hold onto my money until I had enough for another 2nd gen. I do love the square body style, however, and will probably just save my pennies until I can do a drivetrain swap in this one. I wish I had your 2.8 so I could do the 3.4 thing.

This was a rambling mess of me thinking "out loud", but I hope it helps... <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/notooth.gif" alt="" />

I have never had a 1st Gen. so I can't compare. But I have had many many trucks before my 2nd Gen. And I have built many of them to be very capable off road rigs. And this 2nd Gen I have now was nearly as good (Stock), as the others were (Built). It is just amazing how solid these Troopers are. When you close the doors on one of these trucks, they just sound solid. I have had mine in rivers, with the water up to the door handles and never had a drop of water come inside. That is still hard for me to believe.
If the 1st Gen is anything like the 2nd Gen, it to would be a great ride.

The rear coil springs on a 2nd gen will give you a LOT more articulation in the rear...

I have owned one of both, 1st and 2nd gen trooper.

The 3.2 is a great motor. I remember when I had my 1st gen trooper, power was always an issue. But now that I have a 2nd gen with a 3.2 I am not nearly as concerned by that now.

The 2nd gen has a superior suspension. With a coil sprung 4-link suspension in the rear instead of the leaf springs in earlier models.

The interior is alot more refined and comfortable in the 2nd gen. I have all power windows, door locks, mirrors, tilt, and curuise. I LOVE having these options. The 1st gen I had didnt have even one of these.

Basically every single time I walk up to my truck I get a big smile on my face. When I'm walking away from it I have to keep myself from staring at it as I walk away!! haha

Troopah,

How hard/Expensive was it to put those 33s on your 94??? That is really one of my biggest concerns, Also, did the larger tires steal a lot of your power? What about towing... What is the rated towing capacity of those?

Thanks... and thanks to all who are answering!!!

Body Damage is Cool
I've had an 86LS, 95S, 01S, and 95LS Trooper. Both 95s had SOHC and 5spd. The 2nd gen has much more power. The 3.2 and 3.5 handle the 33s fine. Towing w/ 33s and the 3.2 can be a challenge. My trooper really stuggles when pulling my boat (15' grumman v-hull walleye boat) or ATV (Kawi prairie 4x4). Neither load weighs much more tahn 1000lbs, but trooper is very slow. The 3.5L never struggled at all.

I could fit new 33" tires with Old man emu 912 coil springs with 1" rubber spring spacers.
They would rub over bumps while turning.

After I put the 3" body lift on it rarely rubs.
the body lift took me a full day to put in by myself.

Even with 33" tires my trooper GOES! it is very quick when I want it to be. I can get up to 80 mph when passing people on the highway. The true dual exaust and k&n filter help with this.

I have towed my full size 78 bronco behind my trooper. It is not something I would want to do for any distance, but I only had to drive about 5-10 miles.

If you need to tow alot maybe a v-8 is what your looking for.

I have a small pop-up camper that I want to tow, and a 5x8 cargo trailer that I would tow from time to time with a minimal load. Correct me if I am mis-informed here, but wasn't the 3.5 only available on the newer troops? (2000 up)

I would probably get nothing any newer than a 95. Even thinking about a blazer with a 4.3...

I'd take the G2 Trooper.
