Getting the Wheeling Fever
Has anybody ever transplanted the 3000GT Twin Turbo VR4 motor into a GenI Montero? I have a 92 VR4 that was trashed from a high speed roll over, and the engine needs a home. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

To the best of my knowledge, no one has yet successfully transplanted the 3000GT into the Montie, but I'd like to give it a try, PM me with any info!

I just found alot of useable information that was put together about the Mitsubishi 3.0 liter V-6. You can find it here. I'm going to research this more today and see what I can find. The trick here is doing the transplant without my wife knowing, I'll see if I can talk her into driving the Wrangler for a few days. It's going to be fun to see her face when she steps on the gas for the first time not knowing.

I dont think it will work without some interesting exhaust work. The front clip of the vr4 is a little wider than the montero.

However your half the way there, you have the engine and all the wiring and ecu stuff. You have the turbos. The tranny bellhousing will bolt up (dont know about the fly wheel to the tranny though).

You would have to figure out a new exhast, and new mounts. Should be doable, and way sweet.

Hi there. Just wanna contribute my 2 cents here. I have enquired this swap with my mechanic a couple of times and he had objected to this swap as the front shaft from the transfer box has broken cleanly at the joints form previous experiences. They had been toying around with almost all makes of off road vehicles for more than a decade already. The torque generated from the 6G72 Twin Turbo engine wil prove too much for the shaft. Maybe even the transfer case from my own opinion. I'm not a mechanic. I'm only posting what I've gathered.

The main problem that I see with this swap is that the 3000GT engine is mounted sideways while the monty engine is forward facing..not to say its impossible but like doug said could make for some interesting exhaust work and general PITA to adapt all the likage and bracketry.Clearance issues would be the main concern...

I too worry about it being too much power. A guy at M&S auto recylcers, in the Mitusbishi division did such a swap years ago. He does NOT speak english though, only spanish.

Front Drive shaft isn't a problem, a new one can be built to withstand the torque, my doubt is in the CV Joints. Incase I scratch the plan for some reason, I'll take offers for the engine, Turbos, ECU, and wiring. I just had a second opinion from a mechanic buddy and he said its able to be done. We'll see, let you know.

I was working with a board member who is no longer here on turbo-charging a SOHC 3.0 V6 Montero engine. He was going to try to use an exhaust manifold and turbo from one side of the VR4 engine and adapt it to one side of the standard Montero V6 engine. He was going to experiment with this and do the Engine control programming.

I lost touch with him so I don't know how far he got. This option may be easier than trying the transplant. The engine control is the only challenge.
