Alright, I'm about to lose my mind here. I just totally adjusted all the valves to spec with the engine hot. I inspected the timing chain guides and everything seems to be in order. There is still a rattle coming from the front of the motor. What the heck could it be? Maybe the water pump? How can you check and make sure? The 22RE was rebuilt about 20k ago because of the high mileage and a thrown timing chain. I can't quite figure this out. Any ideas?

Might be the steering pump? Remove the P/S belt and see if the noise goes away.

If it's a real deep sounding rattle.. check the front pulley on the end of the crankshaft.. If this sucker is loose and is rocking on the key, it will make one serious rattle that will make you think you have a broken crankshaft... had it happen on an 8RC, a 70's early predecessor engine to the 22RE...
