So, I could use some help with my wife's 4runner so she'll leave me alone. When she puts in the key and turns the power on--ACC and forward--whether she starts it or not, after about ten to fifteen seconds She hears a groan from about the firewall area. It lasts about 1.5 seconds and stops. Sounds like uuuurrrr. It's a low pitch. If you need more info let me know. Thanks in advance. Please don't make me call NPR's car talk with this, I don't want to feel obligated to "contribute".

What year is it, that might help a little ? I have heard a noise in my 4Runner in the same area after turning it off, it sounds like the vacuum system bleeding off through a valve.

Okay, it's a 97 limited we bought it in 99 certified by toyota with a three year warranty. The dealer report showed that it had never been wrecked and had regular dealer services at suggested intervals. We've kept it that way. Hope this helps

Does that mean that the ABS sys. "boots up" (to use comp. lingo)?

Speaking of which(ABS), what does yours sound/feel like when it is in operation i.e. slipping? Just curious. Ours makes a sound and you can feel it in the pedal. My wife always looks at me and asks, "Is that normal?". I always give her that reassuring "ofcourse it is" look, but I'm just bluffing so as not to look stupid. I don't know but I don't want her to know I don't know.

Yup, I could feel it in the pedal. It would kind of feel like pulsing in the pedal. And it made a god awfull noise. I wish I could have just turned it off as I prefer to apply the brakes manually.

so back to the original Q. That groaning noise, is that normal? Or should I just turn up the radio?
