I just purchased a 99 runner with 46,000 on it and the guage was dropping quickly to 1/2 a tank. I thought ...wow what a muncher until it only took 5 gallons to fill it up!
I'm guessing toyota will not honor the recall...right?? The fix looks to be a bit of a headache with the dash cluster having to be removed and sending unit coming out...Yikes . Any advice or calibration I should use to just deal with it??

Thanks reapur,
The TSB you have is EL010-00 and I needed EL010-99. I broke down and bought access. I now have the text for every TSB for the '99 4Runner. There are a lot of them. Did you know there's one for the front brake vibration problem? I also have access to diagnostic info and testing.
Anyway Kenny,
Sit tight, I'm working on this problem. Not all models need the cluster circuit board replaced. In addition the sender is only modified and I'm investigating that too. Some calibration procedures make it worse.

... In addition the sender is only modified and I'm investigating that too. Really? When I had the fuel TSB done, the dealer installed the new gauge cluster and handed me a new complete sensor/sender "assembly" to put in my fuel tank. I just had to swap the original fuel pump onto that assembly that went inside the tank. I remember that the float and arm looked a little different. Nothing was modified. (They were afraid to touch my gas tank since I had bashed it in from rocks, so I installed the new sender myself). What is supposed to be modified? (or what was I supposed to modify that they didn't tell me about?) Mine works great now. Low fuel light comes on at 2.5-3 gals left. Definitely reacts differently from the original gauge/sender.

The TSB indicates just an extension bracket. Did you do the "level fuel calibration" after?

Yeah, after I got the part in there, I remember doing some sort of recalibration, which I got off this forum. Didn't seem to make any difference on mine at that time. Dealer didn't tell me about re-cal.
Over the weekend, I'll look if I have any comparison pics when I swapped the 2 assemblies. I might have a pic, but not sure.

This is no quicky backyard fix. We are talking some work! I was speaking with the previous owner and he stated " I'll have to be honest with you.......this truck really gets horrible gas mileage" ha ha ha ha .. now I know what he meant. He must have been filling up every other day for a few years or else he would have returned it to Toyota for the fix. Maybe thats why he sold it??? He must have been sweating watching that gauge drop from full to 1/2 in a few miles! Kenny S>

My VIN # seems to fall in the "repair cluster and sender together" numbers. I'll stop by the dealer it was sold at and plead with the service manager. Who else is there to plead with ? K>s>

The regional service center that the dealer falls under The dealer has to reply to you one way or the other if the regional guys think you're in the right.
