Auto Trans fluid check #412457 03/05/04 05:08 PM

Hello, I'm new to the group and I have a 2001 Tundra, that replaced 2 previous Dodge Rams that were nothing but trouble. Anyhow, my Tundra has been so trouble free that I am just getting around to checking the Auto trans fluid for the first time and I have 60,000 miles on it. Trouble is nowhere in the owners manual do they tell you the procedure. I know my Dodge had to be in neutral with the engine running and warm. Could someone tell me the process ? Thanks

With your truck on a flat surface check the fluid 1st thing in the morning when it's cold. Then after you've driven the truck 10+ miles, again check the fluid while hot, have the truck on a flat surface, keep the transmission in park with the engine running. Make note where the fluid is in both instances so you can compare them in the future when you do a complete flush or want to determine if you're losing fluid. You should have drained your pan at 30K and should flush at 60K. I'd highly recommend you put in a full synthetic fluid when you do a complete flush.

I thought all the "newer" Toyotas were coming out with syth fluid from the factory now.

Well, that's an interesting question. Toyota won't say what exactly their new transmission fluid is made from so one could conclude that it is NOT a synthetic, otherwise one would assume they would say it's a FULL synthetic. The '04 Tundra's have the Type T-IV fluid from the factory. The T type has been around for several years and Toyota advises their T-IV is a unique oil composition makeup that causes smoother shifting in the Toyota transmissions. I think most people have the opinion that the Type T is just Dexron III with additional friction modifiers to make it more compatible with Toyota's clutches in their automatic transmissions. Amsoil's site states their fully synthetic transmission fluid is compatible with the Type T-IV. The '01 & '02 Tundra's use Dexron III - I'm not sure about the '03 models. I've run Amsoil in my '01 Tundra since week one and the tranny runs like a champ.

Speaking fo trans fluid, when are you suppose to change your transmission fluid for a standard transmission?

I wondered about that. I was about to do the pan drain on my 02 Camry at 30K when I read there is no change recommended. Talked to the shop writer and he agreed and intimated it was synth. Guess I ought to keep up with the changes if it isn't 100% synth. Would be nice to get an official word on it.

A lot of people never change the gear lube on manual transmissions, unless they think water might have got into the case. The few that I know who have changed it did so around the 100K mark. If you do change the gear lube I recommend switching over to a full synthetic from a reputable company such as Amsoil, Mobil 1, Redline etc and you'll never have to worry about changing it again.
