Wow heres a new one - The Rodeos broke again. Its already at the shop but any help diagnostically would be great.

One day it stopped starting. Took it to the shop. $400 for a new fuel pump. Yippee.

2 weeks later this happens: LINK

fixed link length -- Randii

Basically it started stalling out on me on the road.
My mechanic took the fuel pump out and found it was working properly so he ran a new power line from the fuse box back to the fuel pump. He wouldnt let me pay him for the work even though he spent 8+ hours on this. He really is an awesome guy. But Im becoming afraid Im going to drive him to suicide.

Drove it for about 2 weeks/400miles or so and guess what. Stalls out on the highway with no start afterwards. It will start if I wait about 15 minutes but it will stall within 5 minutes so I called the wrecker and waited an hour. I had the wrecker drop it off at my mechanics. When he saw my truck he just shook his head and he vowed that he is going to figure it out. He told me as soon as its fixed this time get rid of it - which is exactly what I am going to do. But it would be nice to get it fixed quickly - any ideas?

thanks

Thats really weird.

Sounds like something electrical to me. Building up charge or something.

I might know what you are up against. I had a problem with my amigo stalling out every now and then for no reason, then restart, or sometimes not restart. The dealer never got to see it when it wasn't working. I knew it was something electrical, turns out it was the camshaft positioning sensor had a short. So that may work for ya, fixed mine fine.

Thanks for the help - I will contact my mechanic and see what he says about this tomorrow.

In the mean time does anyone else have any suggestions?

I was having almost identical probs with my 86 Troop, The culprit was found in the end to be a horribly rusted gas tank, and the rust sediment was clogging everything up.
I had the tank boiled out and should be back in tommorow.
So being that you have a 98 vs an 86 and not much rust... Maybe someone put sugar in your gas tank? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />
Did you piss off a neighbor lately??

Also at the back of your engine there is a cap at the top of your fuel line that can be used to remove air bubbles from the line. Make sure that that cap is there or it will cause similar symptoms. (once again, from personal experience)

That's all I can think of,

The new wire from the pump to the fuse box is only half of the electrical equation!! Check the rear ground wire (bolts to frame on back right hand corner). Mine was corroded and it was a pain to trouble shoot, but I finally got it (after 2 fuel pumps). Your pump is likely drawing excess amps in order to overcome a shoddy ground. This heats it up and shuts it down. After it cools off (~15 minutes) you can get going again. defitely check the sediment issue too, but my money is on the ground wire!!! Good luck.
