Need a Spot
Anyone out there ever use ATF (Mercon/Dextron) for their manual transmission? Specifically, the G-52? I just had my tranny rebuilt from a reputable transmission shop ("Transmission Exchange", in Portland, OR), 1-year warranty, etc...and they recommended that I use ATF for it. Something about viscocity stays much more consistent than what's recommended per spec (75-90, I believe) and also something to do with ATF can withstand higher pressures, also. The only time I've ever heard something remotely similar to this is someone long ago telling me ATF works better in motorcycle trannies, too. Any input?

NO! use 75w-90 or similar...atf is far too thin for a manual transmission...

use the 75-90, years ago when I use to work at Toyota the Manual Trans in the Camry's required atf, but the trucks of any year were all 75-90!

i use Redline MT-90...it's the shiznit (as all the young whippersnappers say today).

learn about it here Redline Oil

i buy mine from here MyOilShop.com

if you do a search on this board for it, you'll see a lot of positive comments.

You could also run Redline MTL, its the same viscosity (70W80) as ATF but has the proper lube characteristics (GL-4) for the manual transmission. I ran it a few years in my W56, but found it a little too thin for my taste and it made the tranny noisier than it is now with MT-90.

I noted the main differencces in my post above. I do find MTL makes a tranny shift better than MT-90, especially when cold. But, I found MTL was noiser than MT-90 in my '85. I've run both, they both work, use either one.
