Ok I want to put 32x11.50's on my 94 ext cab with the 22re and 5-speed. It came stock with 4.10's and I currently have 31.10.50's, I can definately feel a power loss with 31's already so when I put 32's on I will want to re-gear it with 4.88's. Are 4.88's and 32's a good combination or should I gear differently? How much would a new gearing kit be? And how much would it cost to have them installed?

Getting the Wheeling Fever
I have a '97 runner that I had regeared last year. It also was 4.10 stock. I regeared it to 4.88, put it 1-1/2 of lift, and 32" tires. I've taken it out on trails in Big Bear, Anza-Borrego, Los Coyotes, and haven't had any problem. It definitely is slower going down steep grades, but I still have to use my brakes on the really steep grades. I checked into having my gears further lowered and was told that I'd have to put in larger tires which won't fit without more lift. I've been told that I can't go more than 2" of lift in my '97 because the universal joints would be at an extreme angle. Also, since I enjoy rockcrawling, I don't want to raise my center of gravity. I paid $1400 plus to have the work done.

So, if you're going to pay someone to regear, then 4.88s are definately the way to go. However, you might find a set of front and rear used 3rd members from wrecking yard that are 4.56s and these might be a lot more cost effective. Sometimes you can find 3rd members for about $200 or so apiece. $400 is at least what it's going to cost just to regear one axle with brand new gears. 4.88s can also be found in wrecking yards, but they are very rare. The 4.88s only came in some '92 through '95 V-6 automatic trucks that came with 31" tires.

Good luck.

I run 32x11.50's with 4.56's and Im pleased with it, however I probably would have gone with the 4.88's had I not found these used thirds pretty cheap. I only have $150 in these third members while I would have had closer to $500-$1000 if I wanted to switch to 4.88's. I like the rpm range of the 4.56's....not too high on the interstate at 70, and I still have plenty of low-end torque. It's really your call, but if you ever plan on going with an even bigger tire, then go with the 4.88.

Ok, this might be a stupid question but since I'm new I might as well ask it. If I do re-gear to 4.88's do I need to re-gear the front and the rear or just the rear?
