No spark, rebuilt ECU still no spark #417284 03/13/04 10:26 PM

Alright guys, I need some help with this one.

Almost two weeks ago now my Montero just up and died while I was cruising down the freeway. Checked for spark and there was none. Vehicle would still crank though. Interestingly, while cranking, the cylinders filled with fuel as the injectors for some reason got stuck in the on position.

Found that the computer had a burned area where a capacitor had failed. Sent the computer out (AvPro ECM). Sure enough, it was bad. Got the rebuilt one back, put it in and still no spark.

Guy working on the truck thinks that the ignition coil is OK. Where should we go from here? I hate to start buying new parts as a guess that they might be bad. Also, if you recommend a part, please let me know a good source for said part if you have any idea. 91 Montero parts can be hard to find sometimes.

I'm starting to miss the old girl. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

Do you have a copy of the Diagnostic Procedures manual?

Do you have a spark at the coil?

Have you checked for any codes?

If you're having this checked by a mechanic, have them test the crank angle sensor in the distributor. Another thing to check is the power transistor just before the ignition coil in the circuit.

There are ways listed to check these things in the diagnostic manual. The CAS will throw a check engine code usually if it is bad...

Getting the Wheeling Fever
Check your MFI Relay, its located next to your ECM. It supplies power to the ignition system and the fuel pump.

Good morning Mendel.
I have experienced this no spark condition. Very frustrating.
First, I would like to ask if the t-belt is still ok though.
Next, good suggestion to check the mpi relay. Even if it clicks, double check the contacts, make sure they are flush with each other when they connect. Also if they are pitted, good idea to use sand paper to grind down the pittings.
Next, check the ign switch, might be worn out already.
Lastly, on mine, the small black square thing next to the ign coil, the terminals are corroded with that green gunk, clean it up and use dielectric grease and I also adjusted the connectors to make a better connection with that black square thing.
Good luck and hope this helps you out.

the small black square thing next to the ign coil,

I believe that's the power transitor.

Yep, that appears to be the part that has failed. Connections look fine. Stealer is the only one that has this part and you must by the ignition coil along with it. $210 for both.

Mendel, no junkyard around your area? Give me your mailing address and I'll mail my spare out to you. That is too much moolah bro. Did you make sure the connectors were making a solid connection?

Connectors look really good. That's great if you have a spare! I'll PM you my address. How much do you want for the transistor?

Thanks very much for the help.

Dave
