I went to the junkyard today to check out the '95 SR rear axle Mitch mentioned in this thread. I'm a little bit confused. The plate in the engine compartment (which is on the radiator support on a Gen I) seems to indicate the axle ratio is 4.636:1. This makes no sense for a couple of reasons: 1) I don't think I've ever heard anyone mention having this ratio. 2) I can't come up with a ring/pinion gear teeth count that would make this possible. On my Gen I, the ring gear has 37 teeth and the pinion has 8. 37/8= 4.625 The numbers on the plate I'm referring to are listed after the transmission model number. On my Gen I it lists for 'Trans Axle' V5MT1 and then 4625 (no decimal, but that's gotta refer to the ring/pinion ratio). I didn't get the axle due to the ratios being different (I also wasn't in the mood for rolling around on my back in the dirt). Can anyone shed some light on this mystery?? TIA, -Jim

Okay, here's the tag from my Gen I: ![[Linked Image]](http://montero4x4.com/upload/monte-images/IMG_0579.JPG) The '95 definitely had 4636 where mine says 4625. I checked CAPS and it says 4.636; part number MR124857 for the rear gearset.

I'm assuming you'll only be running in 4wd while off the pavement. That slight a difference in ratio between the front and rear would be too minute to affect you off pavement In my opinion. But Yea, thats the common ratio in 95 SR's.

Well, no I'd definitely be using 4WD on the street in the snow. I'd tend to agree with you about the small difference; 4.636 is only 24/100 of 1% more than 4.625. That said, I have to wonder if the 4.636 number is correct as I can't figure out any combination of ring/pinion teeth that would yield that ratio.

51 divided by 11. 51 on the ring gear, 11 on the pinion. Remember, its a much bigger differential!

Any '95 Gen II with the 3.5L motor had the 4.636 gears. The rear axle is larger than that used behind the 3.0L motor. It will not fit the Gen I axle. The only factory locker that MIGHT fit the Gen I (still not 100% sure on this), is the one found in the '92-'93 Gen II SR with the 3.0L motor.
BTW, the Gen II LS with the 5 spd does have the 4.636 gears also, since it has the larger front diff.

I tried a little challenge on this particular rock in a creek that I could not get up. Put the hurt on the clutch trying. No more of that...time for traction control...
