Brake and Battery Warning Lights on. What could it be? #419485 03/17/04 04:57 PM

Getting the Wheeling Fever
Yesterday my Brake and Battery dash warning lights came on for a few minutes, then went off. They did it again a little while later, then I didn't notice them again for the rest of the day.

Today they are steady on. Drove to work this morning and both warning lights were on for the entire 35 min. drive.
I haven't noticed any symptoms yet.

Any ideas? How can I pull the computer error codes?

In regards to the brake lamp, if your parking brake is all the way in, perhaps you have a low Master Cylinder level. Simply check it out and refill as necessary. If not, perhaps a poor level sensor on the MC, or your parking brake switch is somehow messed up.

The battery, well don't know for sure, but perhaps your alternator is going out? or maybe your battery isn't charging anymore? Get them both check out for free at any local Checkers/Kragen's/Schucks or I think autozone will test for free too.

It's not the parking brake and it's not the fluid level.

What's wierd is that they both come on and turn off at the same time.

How can I pull the error codes to see what it might be?

Thanks

The brushes in your alternator are worn down and at the end of their rope (wire tether).
Dont waste your time testing it at the parts chains, it can be intermittent. Get a brush holder assembly from a Toyota dealer ($15-20) and replace them. Very easy job after remove rear cover grille on back of alternator.

If it is the alternator that sucks. Just put it on about year and a half ago. And that was to replace the original Toyota alt. Guess I'll have to dig up my receipt and check the warranty.
There's no way it could be the battery?

Load testing is a way to figure out the lively hood of the battery.

Yeah, could be, but it's probably the alt.

For the umpteenth time, Toyota does the simultaneous CHARGE / BRAKE lights ON PURPOSE, to attract your attention so you know something important is wrong; usually MC fluid level or bad alt.

Yup it sukks, but it's a rerun of a story I've heard over and over. I'm 99% sure it alternator....if you replaced the original with something other than a Toyota then I'm 100% sure <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

It was the alternator... Got it at O'reilly's. It came with a lifetime warranty so they replaced it for free.

I would love to only buy Toyota parts but sometimes the budget doesn't allow. If I don't buy Toyota, I always at least try make sure the part is a decent brand and comes with a lifetime warranty.
