Getting the Wheeling Fever
My rig is now high on the lift at the mechanic's. I'll have to wait with the shocks until this one is solved.

When I engage 4HLc, in a turn (left and right), and accelerate, a loud rhythmic metalic noise comes from under the car. Driveshafts are intact and not in touch with anything external.
  • No noise when central difflock is not engaged;
  • no noise when I drive a straight;
  • no noise when not accelerating or applying force to the power train.

I had a hunch that it might be the front or center diff. The machanic just phoned me that front diff seems OK.
What would be your diagnosys? What would you suggest?
Thanks,
Kobi

Ray, its a Gen II, no hubs. Sounds like t/case chain jumping the sprocket, but that has only occured on design flawed Gen I t/cases as far as I know. Maybe something in the viscous coupling?

But why does'nt it make any noise when I drive straight?
It must have something to do with the front diff, even though the sound comes from the center diff. Otherwise it makes no sense!?

When you are driving straight the center diff, and the front and rear diff dont have the differentiate torque.

When you make a turn the left and right tires travel different distances, as do the front and rear tires.

When you make a turn in 4hi without it locked 50/50 the "center diff" is doing its job so you can make the turn easier.

Might be it. A few weeks ago I got stuck in mud and shifted wildly between Drive and Reverse gear. Can it be the cause?
How can it be fixed? My mechanic says I will have to replace the whole t\case or pay a lot for a rebuild by an expert.

No noise anymore: t\case replaced. Got the Bilstein shocks and Aibach progressive rear coils. Bank acount got a lot lighter. Fill is very good for a paved road and some backyard driving. Will report later about offroad ride.
Thanks,
Kobi
