FJ60 questions... #422103 03/22/04 05:21 PM

I'm thinking of buying an 87 FJ 60 that I'd be using as a daily driver and trail vehicle. How does the 60 do for everyday driving? How about on the interstate? I'm not looking to go fast, and I know about the gas mileage, but will I be able to "cruise" over 55mph? Also, is it true that you can get 18-19mpg on the highway? Thanks,
will

The 60 is not really a highway machine. Sure it'll do over 55, but not effortlessly.... I doubt very much that you would see over 15 MPG in a 60. They are geared low, and heavy.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
will,
I have a FJ62 that serves as my daily driver and trail vehicle. It is pretty similar to an FJ60, the biggest differences being the 62 has an automatic transmission with overdrive and fuel injection. I like it as a daily driver, but it gets kind of expensive especially with the high gas prices. I am able to keep up with the traffic in the city quite well. I am easily able to reach and maintain a 70-75 mph on flat roads. (Going up I-70 to the mountains is different story). I don't think a 60 would be able to do that as well since it doesn't have OD, although its axle gear ratio is something like 3.73:1 where as my 62's is 4.1:1, so maybe the 60 could do those kinds of speeds just as easily without screaming. In my 62 I average right around 12 mpg, I have no idea what the highway mileage is, but I doubt it is in the 18-19 mpg range.

As long as you are comfortable having a daily driver that is probably the slowest vehicle you have owned, rides rough, handles like a brick, and gets bad gas mileage, I think you will love it. I am and I do.

I had an '89 FJ62 a few years back and I agree with Taconut. You either love them or avoid them like the plague. I think I was getting closer to 15mpg and mine wasn't a rough ride, it really was a cruising 'Cruiser at 65-70mph. The knock on those old wagons is they could climb a tree but they couldn't out run one. I can't imagine the carbuerated 60's are any peppier. I really enjoyed mine as an around town buggy and a weekend trail runner until my needs changed for a pick up. I have regretted selling that thing ever since it left my driveway -

Put 31s on it to stretch the power band a little. Top gear is 1:1. You'll be lucky to get 14MPG in a fj60.
