Getting the Wheeling Fever
Does anybody know what the factory part number for the tps for my 1989 4Runner is? According to the sticker on the door jamb the production date is 10/88. The tps currently in the truck has the following part number:89452-28030. I just purchased a new one and they sent me : 89452-20050.
Would I still be able to use the new one?

Thank you.

As long as the plug/connection matches the existing TPS on your truck now, then dont worry about it. Part numbers change over the years...but the parts remain the same. Only concern would be if they sent you the rectangular plug TPS used through 88'...that one wont work for you.

As always, I have to agree with Darin. If the plug configuration is the same, slap 'er on. The screw location (width) didn't change, nor did the total resistance value of the potentiometer. I bought a brand new one on e-bay which had a different part# for five bucks, works fine.

Thanks for the input guys. That did occur to me but I just wanted to make sure there was no other reason. Last night I started to remove the old tps and stripped the philips head screw!! Now I really need to use the noggin to figure out how to remove that darn screw.

Thanks again!!

Quite simple actually. You may want to remove the throttle body to this (recommended anyway to change the TPS). Cut a straight slot across the thread with maybe a dremel tool and us a flat head head screwdriver and spin that puppy right outta' there . Replace the screws with allen head. They're either 6mm or 8mm,(I don't remember).

Side note for folks with pre-89 22R-Es. If you cant find a good used TPS and are scared of what Toyota will do to your backside ordering through them...use an alternative source Not sure of the engine model, Antelope Butt... Mazda 929's from the mid to late 90's use the same TPS as pre-89 Yota 22R-Es. Made by NipponDenso with a Mazda part number obviously, but the innards, exterior and resistance values are the same! So keep that in mind next time your perusing the local boneyard...mazda parts generally are cheaper too. LOL

gcinque,

89452-28030 supercedes to 89452-20050. See my TPS post.

I knew I saw that post somewhere! Next time I'll print the post before I do the work.

I think I'll do as suggested by 2Bigblue2 and remove the TB, while it's out I'll give it a good cleaning.

Thanks everyone for your help
