Has anyone successfully installed 5.25" 2-way speakers in the pillar in the stock 4" location in the rear? Anything I should look out for? Should I just get a 4" replacement instead of the 5.25"? Any thoughts would be appreciated. BTW, I did a search but found nothing regarding this location.
Thanks, ADC

I have 6 1/2" Kenwood excelons in the back of my 94 trooper. I put them where the vents are in the back. Very bad idea, without the ventilation the windows fog up alot easier. I had to use a dremel to cut out the sheet metal to make room for the speakers.

Too bad about the fogging issue, Isaac. Did the 6.5" speakers in the rear improve the sound of your system? If so, how? Did you observe if the they added more bass?
Thanks ADC

Yes I have successfully installed 5.25" 2-way speakers in the stock location. You will cut sheetmetal, and create new holes for the larger screw pattern. The plastic grill will fit over the larger speakers, presuming that they aren't to deep. Go and take a look at it, just open up the hole a little bit more and that's about it. If you have the stock headunit then I would say go with 4", but if you're looking for more, then definitley go larger.

cutting is not needed. i just "made" hole with self-tapping screws and had no problems. also if you want a 6-1/2" just put them in the rear doors.

I've heard that cutting is not needed on 5.25" speakers...but my 5.25" speakers came no where near fitting into the stock cut-out. I took measurements, and could find 5" speakers to fit...but not 5.25's. Trust me...I tried to fit them in without cutting. They didn't fit! Cutting was definitley needed. There maybe some out there that don't require cutting, but if you are looking at specific components, it may very well be!

Why did Isuzu go from 5.25's in old troopers to 4" in everything made since then it seems really dumb my rodeo has pods behind the rear seats that look like they would fit 6 1/2's and isuzu put 4" was that a cost cutting measure?

I also put the Kenwood Excelon 5 1/4's in the back. In my case, no cutting needed, but some hammering is. I took a piece of wood, a hammer, and just made the hole a little bigger. Sounds much better than any 4 inch speaker could. I think one of the great things about this truck is that you can upgrade pretty much the entire audio system pretty easily.

Too bad about the fogging issue, Isaac. Did the 6.5" speakers in the rear improve the sound of your system? If so, how? Did you observe if the they added more bass? They did improve sound, but I didnt install the speakers the right way. I should have created fiberglass pillar boxes for the speakers. The speakers didnt add bass because the way they are attached to the pillar does not make any sort of air seal. If I were going to do it all over again then I would buy components for the rear.

I put a pair of Cerwin-Vega something-Max series 4" speakers in the back. I've since blown them away being on the same two channel amp as the 6.5's in the front, but when I had them, it makes the sound much richer, less like wearing a set of headphones and more like being in a music hall with the sound encompassing and vibrating everything in the car.
Of course that might have been the pair of 12" subs I have. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/oink.gif" alt="" />
